The premiere of the Reformed Club World Cup with 24 teams is expected to take place in China in 2024.
According to the US newspaper “New York Times”, the council of the FIFA World Football Association wants to make a corresponding decision during the upcoming meeting in Shanghai.
The tournament, which will take place this year with seven teams in Qatar in December, was reformed last March against resistance from Europe.
The Club World Cup 2024 will replace the Confed Cup, which could not have taken place in the summer of the year before the Winter World Cup 2022 in Qatar due to the enormous heat in the Persian. It is planned to hold the event every four years. Europe will have the most starting places, probably at least eight.
China is regarded as a rising power in world football and as a possible candidate for the award of the 2030 World Cup. The Chinese Wanda Group has also become one of FIFA’s most important partners and donors. Following the resignation of former DFB President Reinhard Grindel, no representative of the German Football Association will be present at the Council meeting in Shanghai.
