The British casino company Mayfair Casinos Ltd. will reopen the famous London gambling establishment Clermont Club.
The British newspaper The Times reported on Wednesday that the legendary Clermont Club will reopen in summer 2020.
Six gaming rooms on three floors, as well as a private gaming salon, will offer an exclusive gaming experience for well-to-do gamblers. According to new gaming director Dino Constantouris, the club will enter a “new phase” and set “new standards of hospitality, taste, and luxury.”
The Clermont Club was founded in 1962 by casino owner John Aspinall and quickly became the meeting place for London’s chic. Stars like James Bond author Ian Fleming and Bond actress Britt Ekland were guests at the Clermont Club.
A club for nobles and playboys
The Clermont Club has been a hotspot for nobles and playboys for the past 50 years. Originally it was created with the participation of five British dukes, five margraves, twenty counts, and two cabinet ministers. This gave the club an exclusive reputation that spread as far as the USA.
After 10 years, John Aspinall sold the Clermont Club to the US entertainment company Playboy Enterprises, which ran the establishment between 1972 and 1982. However, after losing his British gambling license, Playboy Enterprises had to close the Clermont Club.
Investors give themselves the door handle
Although the Clermont Club can look back on a rich history, business behind the venerable façade in the London borough of Mayfair did not always seem to be going well.
Over the past 14 years, several investors have invested in the club, but have given up their shares. Until 2006, the British Rank Group managed the business and finally sold the club to the Malaysian businessman Quek Leng Chan for GBP 31 million.
Quek Leng Chan operated the club until 2018, but posted losses of millions and sold his shares to Mayfair Casinos Ltd. for only £23 million.
Whether the rich and beautiful will soon flock to the newly established Clermont Club and revive the legend of the establishment could become clear in just a few months.
