July 22nd 2020, destined to be a holiday for Liverpool. Klopp’s side raised the trophy of the long-awaited Premier League 30 years later. Before doing so, they feasted on Chelsea, who played a destructive defencive game and left the task of qualifying for the Champions League until the final day.
Chelsea had the pass to the Champions League at the post, and it noticed in the first times of the match. They left better planted those of Lampard that took the weight of the party. Ball cheque that in the 15th minute became the first time of the match. James extended the attack before the passivity of the defence network, ended up shooting from outside the area with danger, and his shot went past the bar. But it was a mirage.
From that minute on the game changed, and it was the Premier League champion who struck first, and he did so on three occasions. A mishap in Chelsea’s exit caused Keita to recover from three-quarters of the field. The Guinean did not think, shot a howitzer, and the ball ended up in the left corner of the goal of Kepa, before which nothing could do the Spanish goalkeeper.
The Pool began to produce more and more danger, before a Chelsea that every time it cost him more to leave. The second one was starting to smell, and in the 37th minute, Alexander-Arnold confirmed it. A genius of the right-back, international with the three lions. A direct free-kick, some 35 metres from Kepa’s goal, which the Englishman masterfully beheaded over the bar. It ended up in the left corner of the blue target.
But this would not be Klopp’s last shot in the first half. A missed clearance from a corner by Alexander-Arnold permitted Wijnaldum’s free-kick to fall into the box. Candy that the Dutchman did not waste to make the third. However, in the discount, when the first half was already dying. Mount put in a cross that Willian stopped off and forced the intervention of Alisson. But the rejection ended up in Giroud’s boots, who scored the goal of hope for Lampard’s side.
The second half began with Liverpool looking for a fourth. In the 50th minute, after a high wall with Firmino, Salah stood alone against Kepa, but his comment was nothing new. It was the prelude to the quarter-final, and four minutes later, a remote-controlled cross from Alexander-Arnold, the man of the match. It’s hit him with Firmino’s head into the back of the net. 4-1 and the game was practically over.
But the Chelsea shot of caste, Lampard gave entrance to Pulisic and Abraham. Between both, they made the 4-2 that gave them something of life. The American played on the left side, going four, and assisting Abraham, who only had to push it. Pulisic insisted that Chelsea would mathematically confirm their place in the 2020-21 Champions League. And in the 72nd minute, he brought the Londoners into the match once and for all with a great goal. A long ball, missed by Gomez and Van Dijk, ended up in James’ boots.
The full-back put a ball into the box that Pulisic lowered with his chest, and on the half-round, he shot into the top corner. With just over 15 minutes remaining, Chelsea was one goal away from achieving their goal. But in 84′, a ‘made in Klopp’ counter-attack ended up burying Chelsea. Roberson rode up the left and put a goal into Oxlade-Chamberlain who did not miss. 5-3, game resolved and party at Anfield.
The Liverpool-Chelsea standoff continues.
The On April 27th, Chelsea’s official Twitter account made fun of Gerrard’s slip on the anniversary of that action, something that stung the Liverpool fans a lot. But the anger moved onto the pitch during today’s match, epitomised by Klopp and Lampard. The two coaches argued during the game after a foul whistled in favour of the reds. We will have to keep an eye on the next matches between the two teams to see if this trend continues or if the waters calm down.
