What is the House Take?

In a casino, the ‘house take’ is the cut from all bets that is kept by the gambling club or casino, to make a profit. Casino amusement games are typically set up to support the casino in some way, with the intention that more wagers are held than won. The house take is the gross profit from all the games after the bets have been paid. The term can be used to describe the profit after every game or that made over a particular period.

House Take Explained

A casino as a business needs to make a profit to afford the staff and other operational expenses. In order to ensure some profit, the casino games are biased in favor of the house. The profits obtained from bets are referred to as the ‘house take’. The ‘house take’ can be determined by subtracting the value of paid bets from the value of all the bets taken. The ‘house take’ can refer to the profit earned from a single table, a type of game itself, or from all the games in the casino.

The majority of games in the casino incorporate the ‘house take’ into the game’s odds. This is referred to as the ‘house bias’ or ‘house edge’. For instance, in Roulette, the players can bet whether a number ranging between 1 and 36 will be even, odd, red or black. These bets will offer 50-50 chances, and there’ll be no profit for the casino club for some time. The green zero or the two in American Roulette is therefore put into the wheel, twisting the chances of the 50-50 bet in favor of the casino to ensure a profit.

However, in Poker games where players go up against one another, the house can’t influence the chances to make a profit. Instead, the ‘house take’ for Poker appears as a commission on every game as a charge or fee, or part of the prize pot which is paid multiple times throughout the Poker game. The Bookmakers additionally incorporate a ‘house take’ in the cost of bets, to take care of their own expenses.
