What Is Counterfeit ?

Once an item is classified as an imitation or counterfeit, it can be an imitation of a genuine product or a fake product. In the world of gambling, a counterfeit has a different meaning. To counterfeit is to sacrifice the value of a player’s hand because of the doubling of board cards.

Counterfeit Explained

To counterfeit means to make the set of cards of other players weaker, even if the hand has been improved technically. Counterfeiting usually happens in flop games like Omaha Hold Em pokers, where it happens regularly due to the wide selection of possible hands.
Here are some examples of counterfeiting:

During a game, a player has the 7 and 6, and then he or she comes to her turn with the board showing a 7, A, J and 6; giving the player two pairs.
The river gives a J, and so the player has obtained a pair of sevens and a pair of jacks as well, which improves the value of hand even more. But, the other players, now also having the jack and ace to compete with, may also hold an ace or jack themselves, with the possibility of a pair of jacks or aces here too. If they have a jack at this point, they have what is called, trips.

Texas hold’em counterfeiting is the same as Omeha, in which the hands don’t change the value. Most of the time, counterfeiting in Texas Hold’em is less likely to result in the loss of a whole pot. On a Q-J-10 flop, a player possessing A-K will directly fall down an Ace-High Broadway. Once the turn card is a king, then player holding A-K will still have a similar straight, but now so will a player that has A-7, leading to a tie. The player with the A-K did not rank lower, however, became less likely to get the whole pot.

In Texas Hold ’em, counterfeiting often results in ties, like mentioned above, however, can lead to losses. Like for instance, once you have a J-10-9 flop, K-Q is the best possible hand. However, once the turn card is queen, players possessing K-Q will be counterfeited and can lose to a player holding A-K.

In conclusion, every time an outcome means that an opponent has beat you because of the massive amount of hand possibilities, you have been counterfeited.
