Basketball: NBA tests new rule in G League

The NBA uses the G League to try out a new free-throw rule. Should this rule prove itself in the league, a takeover into the NBA is also conceivable.

The professional basketball league NBA uses its substructure as an experimental field. In the G League, a new free-throw rule will be applied next season to shorten the playing time. After fouls, there is only one free-throw left, which can score one, two or three points.

If a player is fouled in an unsuccessful attempt at a threefold, the free-throw that is due earns three points. If a throw passes within the three-way line and a foul is decided by the referees, there are two points on the line. If a throw within the three-way line goes into the basket and there is a foul, the free-throw scores only one point.

Transfer to the NBA conceivable

The rule does not apply in the last two minutes of regular playing time, nor in extra time. Should the measure prove itself in the league of the farm teams, a transfer to the NBA is at least conceivable.

The duration of the NBA games has been a point of criticism for some time now, especially due to time-outs, fouls and the resulting free throws, the games are often very long, especially in the final phase. The G-League season begins on 8th November.
