What is Freeze-Out?

Commonly featured in tournaments, freeze-out refers to a style of poker. One after the other, players are removed until only one competitor remains, claiming all the chips – this is what happens in freeze-out poker. Once players get booted out, they cannot return. Also, as the contest goes on, a singular jackpot prize is always given to the winner.

Freeze-Out Explained

The description of freeze-out poker follows a game sequence being played in a style mostly used in tournaments, consisting of buy-ins from players that remain until their chips are won from their possession, or until they hold all the chips of the entire game. A lot of freeze-out games that are small will request every player to buy-in from the beginning, and then run till they are all eliminated but one. In bigger games, players are permitted to make buy-ins as well as to acquire the position of a player who had been recently removed.

This also involves continuous play till no other new intakes are available or till a particular deadline becomes exceeded. Next there will be the removal of players one after the other until only one player remains and takes up all the chips of the game. This player is the winner and claims the tournament prize.

Compared to other games in the tournament, as soon as a player has been removed, a buy-back cannot happen. As soon as the chips are lost, the player gets eliminated from the entire game. A game with a poker limit is almost the same as a freeze-out, where the players are restricted as to the number of bets, the raises and all-ins that can be made by the players. This is sometimes played in social games as well as novice leagues so as to create some drama using the threat of complete removal from the game. However, due to the fact that players will get an early freeze-out and will no longer be able to play in the game afterwards, it is not a popular game of party poker.
