Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- This was what the Phoenix Suns envisioned with Penny Hardaway and Stephon Marbury in the same backcourt.
Hardaway scored 26 points and Marbury added 24 and 10 assists as the Suns picked up their first victory of the season with a 107-101 triumph over the Golden State Warriors.
Hardaway scored just one point and missed all six shots in Phoenix's season-opening loss to Denver on Tuesday. But he scored 17 points in the first half as the Suns built a 55-42 halftime lead.
"I was me tonight," Hardaway said. "I worked too hard in the offseason to come in and play like the way I did in that first game. I told myself I was never going to go out like that ever again. If I was going to go out, I was going to go out with a bang. I was starting with tonight's game for the rest of the season."
Phoenix took control in the first quarter when it ripped off 14 straight points for a 30-18 lead with 1:46 left. Hardaway scored six in the spurt and Marbury had a pair of assists.
"We're two people that really try to go after it so it's a lot easier to play with someone and get used to them when he can do the same things," Marbury said. "It's a lot easier when you play with guys that can really make plays and you've got another guy who can handle the ball, dribble and pass and do all the same things you're doing. It's a lot easier to do that."
A basket by Antawn Jamison cut the deficit to 100-94 with just under two minutes left and the Warriors had a chance to get closer. But Chris Mills lost the ball and was whistled for a technical foul, which Shawn Marion converted for a seven-point lead.
"The technical foul on Mills cost us because we were making a pretty good run at the time," Warriors coach Dave Cowens said.
With Marbury running the show, Phoenix held a 23-10 advantage in fastbreak points. The Suns also made 22-of-24 at the free throw line.
Hardaway seems to have taken a liking to his new point guard, who was acquired from New Jersey for All-Star Jason Kidd.
"Jason wasn't really a scorer," Hardaway said. "(Stephon) is more of a scorer. We wanted it for me to score and us to win but it didn't work out because we were both hurt at separate times. We never had the opportunity to play on the floor at the same time so it was a dream when I first came here but it never happened. Now it can happen with myself and Steph."
Marion made just 6-of-19 shots but collected 14 points and 16 rebounds. Jake Tsakalidis added 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting off the bench.
"I thought we had some really good moments out there tonight," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "I thought we played unselfishly but in general had a much better rhythm offensively as to how we were pushing the ball and getting good early looks."
Jamison scored 18 points and Mills chipped in 16 for the Warriors, who lost for the 15th straight time dating to last season and have dropped 34 of their last 36 games.
Golden State also hurt itself at the foul line, converting just 26-of-42 (62 percent).
"It's very frustrating to miss that many free throws," Mills said. "Especially since we know we are a much better free-throw shooting team. In practice, we knock them down consistently."
One bright spot for Golden State was the play of rookie Troy Murphy, who had 14 points and 13 rebounds in 27 minutes. Fellow first-round pick Jason Richardson struggled, missing all four shots for one point.
