Game Story
EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Keith Van Horn scored 27 points and Stephon Marbury added 23 and seven assists as the New Jersey Nets won for the fourth time in five games, 111-101 over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Van Horn, shooting just 39 percent this season, was 6-of-15 from the field. But the 6-10 forward made 13-of-14 free throws as New Jersey shot 90 percent (28-of-31) from the line.
Marbury made 9-of-18 shots from the floor and 4-of-4 from the line as the Nets stopped a six-game losing streak against the Cavaliers. New Jersey held a 38-30 advantage in rebounds.
Kerry Kittles, playing his seventh straight game after returning from a recurring knee injury, scored 17 points for New Jersey.
"Kerry is the difference on our team," Marbury said. "Right now he's the best player on our team. He's shooting the ball extremely well. His penetration, his jump shots, they just can't stop him. Right now he's playing like one of the best 2-guards in the NBA."
Kittles made 6-of-12 shots, including 2-of-5 from 3-point range. He hit a 3-pointer with 2:56 left in the second quarter to give the Nets a 49-45 lead and trigger an 11-2 surge. Van Horn had four points in the run that gave New Jersey a 57-47 halftime lead.
For the second straight game, the Nets turned in a solid offensive performance, shooting 46 percent (38-of-82) and committing just nine turnovers. New Jersey shot a season-high 50 percent and had a franchise-low four turnovers in Saturday's 106-94 home win over Houston.
Shawn Kemp and Wesley Person each had season highs in points for Cleveland. Kemp scored 36 and Person added 22, making 8-of-9 shots off the bench. However, the Cavaliers lost their third straight on the road.
"We couldn't guard them off the dribble," said Cleveland coach Randy Wittman. "We allowed them to do what they wanted with the ball. Until we learn that we're going to win with defense we're going to continue to have nights like this."
Brevin Knight contributed 13 points for Cleveland, which shot 56 percent (41-of-73) but committed 15 turnovers. The Cavaliers shot just 59 percent (13-of-22) from the free throw line.
"Although they were shooting 56 percent, we did get to the basket and that really helped us," said New Jersey coach Don Casey. "I'm pleased with the win. We're getting quality minutes from most of our people, so that helps."
Andrew DeClercq opened the third quarter with a layup to cut New Jersey's lead to 57-49. But Kittles responded with a 3-pointer to start a 9-1 spurt. The Nets built the lead as high as 87-68 when Johnny Newman drove for a layup with 25 seconds left in the period.
New Jersey did not allow the margin to fall below nine points in the fourth quarter.
Marbury scored 10 points in the first period as the Nets took a 29-26 edge. Kendall Gill, who had 16 points before getting ejected for his second technical foul with 4:26 to play, hit a 3-pointer to open the second period for New Jersey. Marbury followed with a 21-footer, pushing the lead to 34-26.
Cleveland rallied to tie for a 34-34 tie with 8:46 left in the period on a 19-footer by Lamond Murray, his only basket in seven attempts. Newman's jumper put the Nets ahead for good, 43-41, with 4:28 left.
