Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones scored seven of his 19 points in the final 48 seconds as the Charlotte Hornets held on to defeat the slumping Minnesota Timberwolves, 103-98, and extend their season-high winning streak to six games.
Charlotte took a 96-94 lead on a driving layup by Bobby Phills with 1:18 left. Malik Sealy scored the last two of his season-high 27 points on a 16-footer with 1:04 left to tie the game.
But Jones drained a crucial 3-pointer to give the Hornets a 99-96 lead. After Terrell Brandon's basket with 38 seconds to play, Jones sank two free throws 12 seconds later and teammate Elden Campbell blocked a layup by Tom Hammonds. Jones got the rebound, was fouled and made both free throws with 13 seconds to play to seal the win.
"I felt good all night with my jump shot," Jones said. "The rest is well-needed and I felt fresh tonight."
Derrick Coleman scored 20 points and David Wesley added 17 for Charlotte, which had all five starters score in double figures and improved to an Eastern Conference-best 10-1 at home.
Kevin Garnett scored 17 points and grabbed 20 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who have lost a season-high seven straight games and fell to 0-11 all-time at Charlotte.
"We just have to keep working hard and try to get better and better," Garnett said. "It's tough. I don't know anyone that likes to lose. We just have to keep our heads up and stick together."
The Hornets were outrebounded, 46-33, but shot 52 percent (39-of-75) from the field and scored 27 points off 23 Minnesota turnovers.
"When you play against a team like Charlotte, you have to take care of the ball," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We had 23 turnovers and they turned around and scored 27 points off of them. When you're struggling, everything is hard to come by."
Charlotte took an 86-76 lead on a layup by Campbell with 8:16 remaining in the fourth quarter. However, the Timberwolves went on an 8-0 run as Sealy scored six of his 14 fourth-quarter points, including a running jumper with 5:58 to play to cut the deficit to 86-84.
"They made good plays when they needed to, but so did we," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "Our strong finish was very important. When teams make runs at us, we have to scratch back."
Coleman scored seven points in the third quarter and Wesley's only basket of the period extended Charlotte's lead to 76-67 with 1:41 to go. Despite making only 43 percent of its free throws (6-of-14) in the third quarter, Charlotte capitalized on eight Minnesota turnovers in the period to take a 76-70 lead.
Minnesota led 29-27 after the first quarter and opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run. Radoslav Nesterovic scored five of his 11 points in the run, including a three-point play with 8:27 left as the Timberwolves grabbed a 41-29 advantage.
The Hornets went on an 11-2 run to move within 45-44 as Jones capped the run on a 3-pointer with 4:07 to go. Charlotte took its first lead of the period at 48-47 on a driving layup by Wesley with 2:49 to play and closed out the quarter on a 10-2 run for a 58-51 lead, with Jones making a 16-footer at the buzzer.
