Game Story
LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- After the first quarter, the Los Angeles
Clippers trailed by 16 points. After the second quarter, they
had rewritten a portion of the NBA record book.
The Clippers started badly and got progressively worse as they
set NBA records for fewest points in a second quarter and any
half and were trounced for the 10th straight time by the Los
Angeles Lakers, 95-68.
In losing for the 10th time in 11 games overall, the Clippers
reached a handful of new lows. They scored just three points in
the second period, going without a basket for the final 8:28 and
without a point over the last 6:27.
"Today we played like we didn't even know how to play
basketball," said Clippers forward Maurice Taylor, who shot just
1-of-7 and scored two points. "It was a horrible performance by
all of us. I've gotten to the point where I think I should be
apologing for the way I played."
The Clippers shot just 5.6 percent (1-of-18) from the field and
trailed 49-19 at halftime. They missed their last 13 shots, and
Charles Jones threw away a pass on their final possession,
assuring the Clippers of the worst half of the shot-clock era.
"This was by far my most embarrassing loss," said swingman Eric
Piatkowski, who made 3-of-15 shots. "The first half was the
most embarrassed I've been, moreso than anything, outside of
basketball."
The NBA record for fewest points in a second quarter was five,
set by Utah against the Lakers in 1981 and matched by New York
against Chicago in March of last season. The record for least
points in any half was 20, set by New Orleans (now Utah) in the
first half against Seattle on January 4, 1975.
The Clippers trailed 80-36 after three quarters and even with 32
garbage-time points in the final period still fell one point shy
of the lowest total in the NBA this season.
"I used to think that losing a game at the buzzer or (by) one or
two points was the worst," said Clippers guard Troy Hudson, who
had 12 points and eight assists. "After tonight I don't think
that way anymore."
Shaquille O'Neal collected 21 points and 19 rebounds for the
Lakers, who never trailed and cruised to their 10th victory in
11 games. The Lakers (18-5) moved past idle Portland (17-5) for
first place in the Pacific Division and the best record in the
NBA.
The Lakers and Clippers share the new Staples Center and met
there for the first time in front of a crowd of 18,719, a bit
short of a sellout. Afterward, even Lakers coach Phil Jackson
took a shot at the Clippers.
"For a young team and as talented as they are, they could do a
lot better," Jackson said.
Although the Clippers never led, they were within 17-16 with
3:50 left in the first quarter on a layup by Tyrone Nesby, who
scored 18 points. Kobe Bryant scored 11 of his 18 points in a
15-0 burst that closed the quarter and gave the Lakers a 32-16
lead.
Bryant had a fantastic stretch, making a three-point play off a
running jumper, dunking off a steal by Derek Fisher and driving
for a layup on consecutive possessions.
"We wanted to come in and play hard on every possession and not
give them any life," Bryant said. "Once we got them to start
bleeding, we just let them bleed to death."
The Lakers shot just 26 percent (6-of-23) in the second period
but still widened their lead to 30 points as the Clippers
committed eight turnovers and had no assists.
The Clippers stayed frigid at the outset of the third quarter.
After Olowokandi dunked to open the period, they missed nine
more shots as the Lakers went on an 18-2 run. Glen Rice scored
eight of his 17 points in the burst and a dunk by O'Neal gave
the Lakers their largest lead at 67-22 with 5:46 remaining.
At that point, the Clippers were 8-of-48 from the field and
garbage time was under way.
The Lakers shot 43 percent (39-of-91), held a 59-42 edge on the
boards and forced 20 turnovers, turning them into 30 points.
Olowokandi had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Clippers, who
shot 32.5 percent (26-of-80) and made just 9-of-17 free throws.
Already without leading scorer Derek Anderson, who has a left
ankle sprain, the Clippers lost reserve forward Brian Skinner to
an ankle injury after just five minutes and sat rookie sensation
Lamar Odom after just 22 minutes. Odom has a sore hip.
"We are down two key players now with Derek Anderson and Brian
Skinner," Ford said. "They both have the same type of injuries
and they will probably miss up to two weeks. ... (Odom's) just
got to get healthy and some treatment to be ready for the next
game."
