Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse's improbable 3-pointer ignited the wrong team.
Stackhouse's long shot charged up the Los Angeles Lakers, who responded with a decisive burst and cruised to a 101-93 victory over the Detroit Pistons behind Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant.
The Pistons held a one-point edge with the shot clock winding down when Stackhouse threw in a 32-footer for a 39-35 lead with 6:37 left in the second quarter.
The Lakers responded with a 15-1 spurt featuring four points each from O'Neal, Bryant and Rick Fox. A slam by O'Neal off an alley-oop pass from Derek Fisher gave Los Angeles a 50-40 lead with 3:31 left in the first half.
O'Neal and Bryant repelled another run by the Pistons in the third quarter and finished with huge games. O'Neal collected 22 points and 24 rebounds for his third 20-20 game this season. Bryant scored 26 points, one shy of his season high.
"There were three or four Pistons sitting on my lap and I had to do something else," O'Neal said. "They made it known they weren't going to let me get the ball inside. So I just told my guys to shoot outside and I would get the rebound."
"I think only (referee) Steve Javie could stop Shaq tonight because of the way he played," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "He was so dominating that they covered our outside shot and gave us what we wanted."
Fox had season highs of 20 points and eight rebounds for the Lakers (17-5), who got a big effort from their bench as they won for the ninth time in 10 games and tied Portland atop the Pacific Division.
Grant Hill had 25 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists and Stackhouse scored 24 points for the Pistons, who kicked off a three-game road trip with their 10th loss in their last 11 meetings with Los Angeles.
"I just felt we played the way we had to to win, but we didn't rebound the ball and didn't shoot it well enough," Pistons coach Alvin Gentry said. "They dominated the boards and we couldn't shoot the ball tonight. When you have Kobe Bryant and Shaq, that's a pretty good combo."
O'Neal and Bryant combined for 33 points in the first half, which ended with the Lakers holding a 58-51 lead. The Pistons closed to 62-59 with 9:08 left on a basket by Terry Mills, who scored 12 points.
"He's big, he's strong and knows how to play," Hill said. "If there is a way to stop him, let me know and let the whole league know. I think he is having the best year if his career."
The Lakers answered with a 15-3 run, shutting down the Pistons. O'Neal and Bryant again scored four points each and a basket by Brian Shaw capped the spurt at 77-62 with 10 seconds remaining. Hill scored just before the buzzer.
A jumper by Robert Horry gave the Lakers their largest lead at 91-71 with 6:18 to play. The Pistons got no closer than the final margin.
Los Angeles hardly missed flu-ridden Glen Rice as it held a 24-0 edge in bench points through three quarters and 41-15 overall. The Lakers owned a 63-40 advantage in rebounds and blocked 11 shots, four by O'Neal.
Christian Laettner scored 12 points for the Pistons, who shot just 38 percent (30-of-78) from the field. The Lakers shot 42 percent (42-of-100).
