Game Story
TORONTO (Ticker) -- During the Utah Jazz's longest road trip of
the season, Karl Malone isn't doing any holiday shopping.
Malone scored 28 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and powered a
pivotal surge as the Jazz began their seven-game trip with their
fifth straight victory, 103-88 over the Toronto Raptors.
This was the first of seven games in 11 days for the Jazz, who
don't return to Salt Lake City until two days before Christmas.
"We have a history of playing well before Christmas," Malone
said. "On the road, we have less distractions, Christmas
shopping and all that. Let your wife do that. I don't think
there's any wife in America that doesn't know how to shop."
Bryon Russell scored 17 points and Jeff Hornacek added 16 for
the Jazz, who displayed their usual excellent execution on both
ends. Utah shot 49 percent (35-of-72) while holding Toronto to
35 percent (27-of-77).
"I think we're getting back to a level where we are playing with
some determination," Hornacek said. "Guys are willing to help
each other out defensively."
"It was a typical Utah Jazz game but not a typical Toronto
Raptors game," Raptors guard Dee Brown said.
Malone scored eight points in a 17-4 run over a 4:20 span of the
second and third quarters. He helped turn a tie game into a
45-32 advantage early in the third quarter.
The Jazz cruised from there, leading by as many as 27 points, as
they avenged a 100-87 home loss to the Raptors on November 26.
Utah is 6-2 all-time against Toronto.
"They came into our place and did everything that we did
tonight," Malonme said. "They were very physcial with us.
Whenever you lose to a team that way, you like to get that game
back. We're out on the road for seven games and it's so
important to start out with a win."
Kevin Willis had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Vince Carter was
limited to 16 points for the Raptors, who have lost two in a row
following a three-game winning streak to drop out of first place
in the Central Division.
"Every team will go through this. What team doesn't lose two,
three or even four in a row " Willis said. "You have to
mentally bounce back and that's the tough part."
Ninth in the NBA at 23.2 points per game, the high-flying Carter
was somewhat contained, making 7-of-16 shots and just 2-of-7
free throws.
"Vince was never able to get that big dunk and get the crowd
going," Malone said.
A jumper by Tracy McGrady forged a 28-28 tie with 3:11 left in
the second quarter but was Toronto's last basket of the first
half. Malone made four free throws around a pair by Russell
before two from Antonio Davis left Utah with a 34-30 lead.
Malone and John Stockton closed the first half with layups and
Hornacek opened the second half with a free throw, following a
technical foul on Raptors coach Butch Carter, and a jumper for a
41-30 bulge with 11:28 left.
"The third quarter started out whistle, whistle, whistle," Butch
Carter said. "I didn't like the whistle and that's all I'm gonna
say."
A jumper by Toronto's Charles Oakley was answered by jumpers
from Russell and Malone that made it 45-32 a minute later. The
lead never dipped below double digits thereafter.
Two free throws by Hornacek closed the period, gave the Jazz a
72-57 lead and triggered a 20-6 run. Butch Carter drew a second
technical to start the fourth quarter and was ejected. Howard
Eisley scored all eight of his points and Greg Ostertag added
six to give Utah its largest lead at 90-63 with 8:05 to play.
"It was a last resort. I just wasn't going to let us get beat
up," Butch Carter said.
Stockton scored 12 points and Ostertag added 10 for the Jazz,
who made 30-of-33 free throws and 3-of-5 3-pointers.
"I thought we never gave them any big runs or allowed them to
gain any momentum," Stockton said. "The fans can't get into it
if their guys aren't making any shots. We deserve some credit
defensively but they missed a lot of open shots and free
throws."
Alvin Williams scored a season-high 14 points and McGrady added
11 on just 3-of-12 shooting for the Raptors, who made 30-of-44
free throws and held a 46-39 rebounding advantage.
