Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- What a difference a day makes.
Keith Van Horn scored 21 points to lead six players in double figures as the New Jersey Nets used a huge third quarter to defeat the Houston Rockets, 106-94.
Coming off an ugly loss to the Chicago Bulls on Friday, the Nets had their best shooting game of the season, connecting on 50 percent (44-of-88). Kendall Gill scored 17 points and Sherman Douglas added a season-high 15 off the bench for New Jersey, which has won three of its last four games.
"We were all pretty embarrassed losing to the worst team in the league last night," said Gill. "If we had come home tonight and lost to basically a wounded animal (Houston), it would have been the biggest backbreaker of the season."
"It's good to get back into the swing and playing," Douglas added. "The team got us off to a good start and that allowed me to go out and play a little bit more. Offensively we played well, defensively we're making strides."
Leading 55-43 at halftime, the Nets opened the second half with 11 straight points. Van Horn hit a 3-pointer to trigger the run and capped it with a 15-foot jumper to give New Jersey a 66-43 lead with 7:08 remaining.
Jamie Feick's layup gave the Nets their largest lead at 76-49 with 2:29 remaining in the period. New Jersey took an 81-58 lead into the fourth quarter.
Feick had 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Nets, who committed a franchise-low four turnovers in posting their third straight home win.
"The whole team played extremely well," Feick said. "Tonight we executed our plays and controlled the tempo. At the same time, we played good defense and weren't scrambling around. It was a lot different than last night."
Both teams cleared their benches in the fourth quarter. Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich was frustrated with his team's lack of effort.
"You play physically and mentally soft and get your (butts) kicked, and that's what happened," Tomjanovich said. "We have been in every game this year and our response should be a lot better. No fire, gotta have some fire."
Cuttino Mobley and Bryce Drew each scored 18 points for Houston, which shot 43 percent (34-of-79) and committed 16 turnovers. Rookie guard Steve Francis added 13 points but just two after the first quarter.
"Just about every loss you want to try to forget, I think I can do a good job in trying to forget a loss like this," Francis said. "Something like this you have to look at and just wave off. Just be ready to play the next game."
