Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Behind Nick Van Exel, the Denver Nuggets have squeezed a season's worth of road wins into one trip.
Van Exel scored 18 of his 26 points in the second half to rally the Nuggets to a 101-99 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks and their third win on their current road trip.
"When we left on this trip, I thought two wins would be fantastic, three would be unbelievable," said Nuggets coach Dan Issel, whose team completes its trip Tuesday at Seattle. "But you always step up your expectations. And now my expectations are that we will win four games on this trip."
The Nuggets had won just two road games in each of the last two seasons, going a combined 4-62 away from home. They began this six-game trip with an 0-5 road mark this season but won in their first two stops at New York and Philadelphia.
"This is a different team," Issel said. "The last couple of years, we didn't have the talent we have this year. We wore the same uniforms. That's about the only thing that's similar between this year and the last two years. This team is more talented. They have more character. And most important, they want to win."
Van Exel helped move Denver to 3-2 on this trip with his clutch shooting. His baseline runner with 2:23 to go gave the Nuggets the lead for good at 93-92 and he added two free throws with 7.3 seconds remaining.
"Anytime you have these pressure situations, you want to be the guy with the ball," said Van Exel, who made 9-of-23 shots and handed out eight assists.
George McCloud scored 21 points off the bench and rookie James Posey added 16 -- both season highs -- for the Nuggets, who erased a 16-point third-quarter deficit.
Ray Allen scored 25 points and Glenn Robinson added 24 for the Bucks, who continue their habit of building and blowing leads. Milwaukee is 3-5 in its last eight games, squandering big leads in five of those games.
"We've got to play 48 minutes," Robinson said. "We get a little lead and we don't stay on top of it. We kind of think that we've got the game won and we still have 23 minutes left. That's a lot of time."
Robinson scored seven points in an 11-1 run that gave Milwaukee a 70-54 lead with 5:43 remaining but Denver began its comeback. Van Exel scored 10 points in the remainder of the period to cut the deficit to 79-71 entering the fourth quarter.
McCloud had two 3-pointers and Van Exel had one in a 13-4 surge that opened the final period and gave Denver an 84-83 lead with 6:37 remaining.
After Van Exel's runner, Robinson missed and Raef LaFrentz hit a 3-pointer for a 96-92 lead with 1:51 left. Allen hit two free throws and a jumper around a foul shot by McCloud to leave the Nuggets with a 97-96 lead with 7.8 seconds to go.
Van Exel immediately was fouled and hit both free throws before Robinson missed a 3-pointer. Posey's two free throws sealed it and Allen threw in a buzzer shot from mid-court.
"Denver's been a pesky, confident team in the fourth quarter," Bucks coach George Karl said. "They played more confidently than we did down the stretch. We had a 16-point lead in the second half. All of a sudden, it's a ballgame. We just don't finish situations off well."
Antonio McDyess had 15 points and 14 rebounds and LaFrentz scored 12 points for the Nuggets, who shot 42 percent (36-of-86) from the field but made 11-of-23 3-pointers.
Sam Cassell had 16 points and 12 assists and Tim Thomas scored 14 points for the Bucks, who shot 44 percent (39-of-88) and held a 49-42 rebounding advantage. Ervin Johnson grabbed 13 rebounds and Scott Williams added 10.
