Detroit (10-10) at LA Lakers (16-5) 9:30 pm EST ---------------------------------------------------------------- LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers look for their ninth victory in 10 games tonight when they host the Detroit Pistons, who are looking to climb over .500.
Shaquille O'Neal scored 30 points, Glen Rice added 22 and Kobe Bryant 14 as the Lakers posted a 106-94 victory at Vancouver on Saturday. Rick Fox scored seven points during a decisive fourth-quarter run as Los Angeles avoided its first back-to-back losses of the season after a tough 103-91 setback at Sacramento on Wednesday.
O'Neal has flourished under coach Phil Jackson, averaging Most Valuable Player-like numbers with 28.2 points and 13.7 rebounds per game. Bryant is averaging over 20 ppg in six games since returning from a broken hand that kept him out of the lineup for the beginning of the season.
The latest turn in what has been a highly inconsistent season for the Detroit Pistons came Friday. Grant Hill scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Jerome Williams added 17 and 12 as the Pistons posted their second straight win, 107-83 over the slumping Los Angeles Clippers.
Detroit has won three of four to move back to the break-even mark for the first time since being 7-7 on November 28. The Pistons have alternated between looking awful and like a legitimate playoff contender for most of the early season.
Hill has been a steady performer for the up-and-down Pistons, averaging team highs of 27.5 ppg and 5.9 assists to go with his 6.9 rpg.
These teams did not meet during the lockout-shortened season, but the Lakers have dominated the series of late, taking nine of the previous 10 meetings.
