Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Facing one of the league's best defensive point guards, Jason Kidd chose the right time to assert himself.
Kidd scored 17 of his season-high 29 points in the fourth quarter and Todd Day and Oliver Miller had strong games off the bench as the Phoenix Suns rallied for a 110-107 victory over the gutsy Orlando Magic.
Squared off against Darrell Armstrong, Kidd made the fourth quarter his own, sinking 5-of-7 shots. The win was the fourth straight for the Suns over Orlando and snapped a two-game losing streak overall.
"We were very fortunate to win that game," said Suns coach Danny Ainge. "We made some great plays down the stretch. ... Jason made some unbelievable plays to carry us."
"We weren't turning the ball over and the name of the game is to shoot," Kidd added. "Coming down the stretch, we took care of the ball. We got the ball to the right guy at the right time and we won the game."
Armstrong, who has emerged as one of the best point guards in the Eastern Conference, had 16 points, seven assists and six rebounds. But he scored only five points in the final period as the Magic completed a 2-2 road trip and fell to 9-10 on the season.
Miller had a season-high 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked five shots while Day added 19 points in 27 minutes for the Suns, who won despite committing 21 turnovers and getting outrebounded, 54-32.
"I want to go out and try to be productive and try to energize," Day said. "I think we were kind of struggling when I came in and I hit a couple of big shots and got us going."
Rookie Corey Maggette had 14 points and six rebounds in 21 minutes for Orlando, which was 1-for-13 from 3-point range and committed 28 turnovers.
"We gave that one away. It wasn't like the turnovers were caused by the defense, it was just bad decision-making," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "I thought we got a little bit impatient because we were having our way scoring. Jason Kidd just decided to win the game. We basically tried everybody down the stretch, but we couldn't make a basket."
The Magic held a 101-97 lead after a 15-footer by Armstrong with 2:22 to go. Cliff Robinson hit two free throws for the Suns 10 seconds later and Kidd tied it with two from the line with 1:54 remaining.
Orlando's Pat Garrity missed a 3-pointer with 1:41 to go and Kidd found Miller for a dunk to put Phoenix ahead. Kidd added a layup with 70 seconds left to push the Suns' advantage to 105-101.
Rex Chapman, starting in place of the injured Penny Hardaway, hit two free throws for Phoenix 25 seconds later but Anthony Parker buried a 17-footer to keep Orlando within four. Kidd sealed the victory with two free throws with 31 seconds remaining.
"When you are up by four on the road, you think you've got it, you play to win," Armstrong said. "We made a couple of mistakes down the stretch. That whole fourth quarter, we weren't really patient enough. It was Jason and Oliver Miller who really got them going in the fourth quarter. They made some big plays down the stretch."
The Magic raced to an 8-1 lead 2 1/2 minutes into the contest, but the Suns rallied to tie with 4:24 left in the opening quarter. The Suns used a late spurt to take a 34-27 lead after 12 minutes, tying their season high for points in the first period.
Phoenix opened the second quarter with an 11-2 burst to open a 45-29 lead and still led 56-43 with just over five minutes to go before halftime. The Magic responded with 11 straight points as Maggette scored six and Doleac four.
Orlando finally regained the lead with 8:27 left in the third quarter but the game was knotted, 80-80, heading into the final period.
Hardaway missed his second straight game with plantar fasciaitis in his right foot.
