Game Story
TORONTO (Ticker) -- In the third quarter, Vince Carter was a
one-man show.
Carter outscored the Cleveland Cavaliers as he collected 15 of
his 32 points in the third period to lead the Toronto Raptors to
a 101-98 victory.
Coming off a career-high 39 points against the NBA champion San
Antonio Spurs on Sunday, Carter put together 30-point games for
the first time in his brief career.
While Cleveland struggled to 13 points in the quarter, the 1999
NBA Rookie of the Year scored 11 in the final four minutes, when
the Raptors went on a decisive 18-4 surge.
"He was having trouble getting to the basket because of their
double-team," Raptors coach Butch Carter said. "I put him right
under the basket and loaded up with shooters."
The Raptors survived a pair of mistakes by Vince Carter in the
final minute and won for the fifth time in six games to remain
atop the Central Division.
"We have to keep up the intensity and have a playoff
atmosphere," said Vince Carter, who made 13-of-26 shots and
added four assists. "I'll keep passing out of the double-team
and hope my teammates hit their shots. That works just as well
as me scoring."
Dee Brown scored a season-high 17 points for Toronto, which also
did a good job of shutting down Shawn Kemp. Cleveland's star
forward was limited to one basket in the first half and finished
with 16 points and five rebounds, shooting 4-of-14 from the
field.
"You have to play a foul-less game at the start," said Kemp, who
was saddled by foul trouble. "It's something I'm stll adjusting
to."
Brevin Knight scored a season-high 20 points and handed out 11
assists for the Cavaliers, who have lost two in a row following
a three-game winning streak.
"We didn't come out with any energy at the start of the third
quarter. That's where we lost the game," Cleveland coach Randy
Wittman said. "After playing the first two quarters the way we
did, that's hard to accept."
A free throw by Andrew DeClercq gave Cleveland a 63-56 lead with
3:55 to go in the third quarter before Carter and Tracy McGrady
took over.
Carter began the run with a jumper with 3:09 left and McGrady
had a three-point play before Carter's 3-pointer gave Toronto
the lead for good at 64-63 with 2:07 left.
Carter made a short jumper and McGrady and DeClercq traded free
throws. Dell Curry's 3-pointer extended the lead to 70-64 with
1:01 remaining and Carter added a jumper and two free throws in
the final 23 seconds, giving Toronto a 74-67 advantage.
"When he's making his jump shots and going to the basket the way
he does, he's tough to handle," Wittman said. "He ignited them
in the third quarter and got the crowd involved."
"If he keeps developing his mid-range jumper, the sky is the
limit for him," Carter said. "He's got something special going
right now."
The run continued into the fourth quarter as Carter dunked and
McGrady had a pair of baskets around a free throw by Muggsy
Bogues for an 81-67 lead with 10:20 remaining.
Two free throws by Bogues kept the lead at 98-87 with 2:06 left
before the Raptors got sloppy. Knight had a three-point play
and Carter missed twice before a layup by Cleveland's Bob Sura
with 1:03 to go.
Carter was called for a technical foul and Knight made the free
throw before sinking two more from the line to cut the deficit
to 98-95 with 39 seconds left. Lamond Murray stole the ball
from Carter but Kemp missed a 20-footer and Curry made 1-of-2
from the line to seal it with 12 seconds left.
Curry scored 11 points, McGrady added 10 and Bogues nine and
eight assists -- all off the bench -- as the Raptors shot 43
percent (38-of-89) and held a 47-41 rebounding edge, overcoming
22 turnovers.
"This is an opportunity for our team with seven straight home
games," Bogues said. "You have to take advantage and close
these games out. We have to make teams play our tempo and that
way you feel more comfortable."
"You're going to have bad starts but I've learned to just let
the game come to me," Carter said.
Sura and Wesley Person scored 11 points apiece and DeClercq had
10 rebounds for the Cavs, who shot 44 percent (35-of-80).
Charles Oakley, Kevin Willis and Antonio Davis took turns on
Kemp and limited him to 1-of-5 shooting in the first half. But
the Raptors were cold themselves and trailed 54-43 at halftime.
Knight scored 10 points and Sura added nine to lead Cleveland.
"The third quarter was the biggest difference," Kemp said. "It's
happened to us a couple of times this year. We just have to
realize how important it is to come in at the half with an
11-point lead and how to protect it."
Davis departed in the third quarter after getting elbowed in the
left eye. He was diagnosed with a concussion, received stitches
to close a cut and did not return.
"He took a hit across the head and for precautionary reasons we
kept him out," Carter said. "He will be day-to-day."
