Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Derek Fisher scored 14 of his 16 points in the first quarter, when the Los Angeles Lakers gained a 15-point lead and rolled to their season-high sixth straight win, a 117-100 triumph over the Orlando Magic.
Matched up against defensive demon Darrell Armstrong, Fisher was 4-of-6 from the floor, including all three of his 3-pointers, attempts as Los Angeles built a 34-19 lead.
"We're off to a good start," Fisher said. "We have the ability to play down against the teams we are playing and sometimes get into a funk. Tonight, we got off to a good start and we were able to ride that situation out."
Shaquille O'Neal added eight points for the Lakers, who shot 52 percent (12-of-23) in the opening 12 minutes while holding the Magic to 30 percent (6-of-20).
"We came in and did what we had to do," O'Neal said. "I think we knew this team would come out with a lot of energy and play loose. We shot well and did a lot of things right.
O'Neal dominated his former team with his 15th double-double of the season, collecting 27 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. He was 11-of-16 from the floor for Los Angeles, which shot 49 percent (40-of-82) and is riding its longest winning streak since a 10-game run last season.
"I'm the Donna Summer of the NBA -- I work hard for my money," joked O'Neal.
Glen Rice added 24 points for the Lakers, who have won five in a row at home.
"These games never make ne happy, unfortunately, but it is nice to win them," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "It's nice to see the players play well, but I don't like to see 23 turnovers by a team I coach."
Armstrong scored 20 points and dished out nine assists while Pat Garrity added 16 points for the Magic, who shot just 40 percent (31-of-78) and fell to 2-1 on its four-game road trip that ends Tuesday at Phoenix (11-6).
"They are are a really good basketball team," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "They might be the best team we have played so far and we've played Portland also. I thing the ring leader in this is Shaq, who is playing lights-out basketball and is clearly the MVP so far."
Rick Fox grabbed seven rebounds as the Lakers, who close their four-game homestand Tuesday against Washington (5-13), gained a 44-36 advantage, including 17-11 on the offensive boards.
Los Angeles outscored Orlando, 46-20, in the paint and gained its biggest lead, 111-84, with 5:18 left on Brian Shaw's layup.
O'Neal scored 20 points in the first half and Fisher and Rice added 14 apiece as Los Angeles gained a 67-49 halftime cushion.
