Game Story


EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Not even the sight of
the rival New York Knicks could inspire the hapless New Jersey
Nets. 


Allan Houston scored 24 points as the Knicks took control early
and posted a 92-82 victory over the Nets, who suffered their
fifth straight loss. 


Playing the team with the most losses in the league, the Knicks
left little doubt about the outcome, never trailing and leading
by as many as 18 points in the third quarter.  Houston scored 14
points in the first quarter, helping the Knicks build a 25-15
advantage. 


Latrell Sprewell added 20 points and Kurt Thomas had 16 and 11
rebounds for New York, which has won four of its last five
games. 


Stephon Marbury scored 19 points and handed out eight assists
for the Nets (2-15), who have lost six straight home games and
have the most losses in the league.  New Jersey was coming off a
two-point loss to the defending champion San Antonio Spurs. 


One bright spot for the Nets was the play of reserve Jamie
Feick, who grabbed 23 rebounds, one shy of the most in the NBA
this season set by Houston's Charles Barkley. 


"We just couldn't get over the hump," Feick said. "I thought we
scrapped and hustled a lot and I thought we did a good job on
the boards.   We got a lot of loose balls down the stretch. Like
I said, we just couldn't get over the hump." 


New Jersey, which came into the contest tied with the Chicago
Bulls as the worst shooting team in the league at 40 percent,
had another forgettable afternoon from the floor. The Nets shot
just 31 percent (28-of-90). 


"The quality of shots we got was decent at times, but we didn't
knock them down," Nets coach Don Casey said. "When you are two
and whatever that basket looks awfully small, compared to when
you are 20-1." 


"They beat us both times in the preseason," New York coach Jeff
Van Gundy said. "We have the ultimate respect for them.  I
thought they played very hard tonight. They probably missed some
shots they could have made, and I think our defense had a little
something to do with that." 


Sprewell gave the Knicks their biggest lead of the contest at
56-38 with 8:12 left in the third quarter.  The Knicks held a
72-60 advantage entering the final period. 


The Nets did show some fight and closed within 83-77 with 2:14
remaining after Keith Van Horn converted a layup. But Charlie
Ward provided the dagger on the next possession, draining a
3-pointer as the shot clock expired to push the lead back to
nine. 


"I think Charlie's shot was pretty big," Houston said. "I think
that was the one that got em'. Every time we really needed a big
basket we hit one." 


Houston scored 16 points in the first half as the Knicks held a
46-34 advantage.   He made 8-of-18 shots from the floor,
including going 3-of-5 from 3-point range. 


New York won despite shooting 42 percent (32-of-77) and
committing 17 turnovers. They were also outrebounded, 50-48. 


While Houston and Sprewell were presenting problems for the Nets
on the perimeter, Marcus Camby made life miserable for them down
low.  The active big man scored 10 points, grabbed 10 rebounds
and added six blocked shots.
