Game Story
CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Bulls got a real good look at
their future. Unfortunately, it presently is comprised of
rookies.
First-year players Elton Brand, Ron Artest and Dedric Willoughby
led a fourth-quarter charge but all three missed shots on the
final possession as the Milwaukee Bucks escaped with a 92-91
victory. The Bulls have lost nine straight games.
Milwaukee's Glenn Robinson scored 19 points, including a short
jumper with 13 seconds to play that gave the Bucks just their
third win in the last seven games. Robinson sat out Thursday's
loss to the New York Knicks with a sore calf but bounced back
tonight.
Sam Cassell had 23 points and 15 assists for the Bucks, who led
by 17 points midway through the second quarter and by 12 with
7:12 to play before the Bulls rallied behind their young trio.
Artest scored a season-high 21 points, Brand contributed 19 and
a season-high 17 rebounds and Willoughby scored 12 points for
Chicago, which fell to a league-worst 1-14.
"We were in a position to win at the end because of our young
guys," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "Dedric Willoughby was good
off the bench."
"I think some of the new guys did get a lot of good late-game
experience from this," Brand said. "We just have to keep
working hard. It was a tough loss, but I thought we had it. You
have to build on it as a positive."
Two free throws by Ray Allen, who also scored 19 points, gave
Milwaukee an 86-74 advantage with 7:12 remaining. Willoughby,
filling in at point guard for the injured Randy Brown, made a
3-pointer to trigger a 17-4 run.
Artest scored eight points in the surge, including a 3-pointer
that cut the deficit to 90-89 with 51 seconds left. Brand
scored four, including a turnaround jumper that gave Chicago its
first lead at 91-90 with 29 seconds to go.
"Chicago got on a heck of a run the last five minutes," Cassell
said. "They got back into that game and almost won it. We have
got to change our mentality and approach."
Robinson nearly traveled and appeared to be fouled but made a
tough rainbow 13-footer to give Milwaukee a one-point lead.
"The play was designed to get a post-up shot," Robinson said.
"No one had a real open shot. I just made a tough shot at the
end."
"There was a rookie mistake that cost us," Floyd said. "We had
a foul to give on their last possession and we wanted to take it
if they got in a scoring position. Ron Artest gained some
experience and I don't think he will make that mistake next
time."
On Chicago's final possession, Artest drove but missed a layup
and the ball went out of bounds off the Bucks with eight seconds
left. Willoughby had an open 3-pointer but missed. Brand got
the rebound and tried a fallaway jumper that also missed as the
horn sounded.
"We just came down hard at the end," Brand said. "We had three
good looks at the basket. But it is tough to lose games like
that."
Danny Manning scored 15 points off the bench for the Bucks, who
shot 54 percent (38-of-70) from the field and beat the Bulls for
the fourth time in the last five meetings.
"This game shows what happens to us," Allen said. "We mess
around too much. It can be just two plays or anything like that
in a game and it sets us back. It's typical of how we're
playing."
Hersey Hawkins scored 11 points for the Bulls, who shot just 38
percent (30-of-79) but held a 44-34 rebounding advantage. Brown
left in the third quarter with an ankle injury.
"It was a great team effort, which is something we have been
trying to stress all year long," said Hawkins, an 11-year
veteran. "I think our young guys deserve a lot of credit."
Robinson scored seven points in the first quarter as Milwaukee
bolted to a 28-17 lead. Two free throws by Cassell capped a 10-2
surge that widened the advantage to 44-27 with 5:11 to play in
the second quarter.
Chicago closed to 53-41 at halftime and Brand and Artest scored
nine points each in the third period, which ended with Milwaukee
holding a 78-71 advantage.
