Game Story
ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Jimmy Jackson and Isaiah Rider have led the
Atlanta Hawks in scoring for most of the early season. But now,
they have begun to truly lead them.
Jackson scored a season-high 33 points, Rider added 30 and both
played brilliantly in the fourth quarter as the Hawks extended
their season-high winning streak to four games with a 112-110
triumph over the Detroit Pistons.
Jackson and Rider, who came to Atlanta from Portland in the deal
for swingman Steve Smith, were unable to make an immediate
impact as the Hawks stumbled out to a 1-6 start. But Atlanta's
top two scorers now appear poised to make an impact on the
Central Division.
"They played off of each other really well," Atlanta coach Lenny
Wilkens said. "We try to put them in those situations and they
delivered. Both players played with a lot of confidence. We
wanted to help them. We weren't just going to let them loose."
Jackson, whose previous season high of 26 came in Thursday's win
over Sacramento, made 12-of-19 shots from the floor and 6-of-7
at the line as Atlanta improved to 7-3 since its dismal start.
"It's about opportunities. You've got to take advantage when
they present themselves," Jackson said. "I can score, it's just
a matter of being in the right place at the right time."
Rider made 10-of-18 shots and 9-of-10 at the line as he fell two
points shy of his season high. He grabbed nine rebounds and
handed out six assists. His free throws with six seconds to go
gave the Hawks a 112-107 lead.
"It was definitely a big win," Rider said. "Jim played good. He
shot the lights out. Jim was in the zone tonight. He made my
eyes open wide on some shots tonight. We've been around each
other since we were young at camps and stuff. We respect each
others game. We scratch each other's backs and there's no
jealousy out there. Doing well together is better than
individually."
Grant Hill scored 33 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the
Pistons, who have dropped four of five since a season-high
five-game winning streak. Hill had a chance to win it but his
desperation half-court shot at the buzzer bounded off the
backboard.
"I just couldn't get the right plays at both ends down the
stretch," Hill said. "We didn't execute offensively, and
defensively we didn't get stops. They outhustled us in the
third quarter and got us in a hole going into the fourth."
In a game that featured numerous lead changes and ties in the
second half, the Pistons used an 8-0 fourth-quarter run to take
a 101-97 lead with 4:17 remaining. That advantage grew to
105-100 on Hill's jumper with 3:05 left before the Pistons went
stone cold down the stretch.
While the Pistons missed four shots and committed a turnover in
five trips, the Hawks went on a 9-0 run to forge ahead for good,
109-105, with 25 seconds to play.
Jackson and Rider combined to score 14 of Atlanta's 27 points in
the fourth quarter.
The Hawks snapped a three-game regular-season losing streak
against the Pistons. Atlanta beat Detroit in five games in a
first-round playoff series last season.
Hill, who has scored 30 or more points nine times this season,
collected 14 in the second quarter to give Detroit a 60-52 lead
at the half.
Jerry Stackhouse had 20 points and Christian Laettner added 19
for Detroit, which shot 48 percent (42-of-87). The Pistons went
20-of-20 from the line and committed just eight turnovers but
could not come up big when it counted most.
"It's the same old story," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "We
play great to a point, but we've got to finish games. We just
couldn't finish the game off."
Detroit's Lindsey Hunter scored a season-high 22 points, but
misfired on a pair of potential tying 3-pointers in the final
minute.
Bimbo Coles and Alan Henderson scored 15 points apiece for the
Hawks, who shot 51 percent (39-of-76) and held a 40-34 advantage
on the boards. Atlanta's Dikembe Mutombo had 11 points and nine
rebounds.
Jackson hit back-to-back jumpers, Rider drained a 10-footer and
Jackson was good from 25 feet as the Hawks opened the second
half with a 9-4 run to close to 64-61 with 8:44 left in the
third quarter.
