Game Story
EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets
found their path to a stunning victory blocked by Tim Duncan.
Duncan atoned for a pair of turnovers in the final minute,
swatting away Stephon Marbury's potential tying layup and
preserving a 96-94 victory for the San Antonio Spurs, who have
won seven straight games.
"I made some mistakes down the stretch and I wanted to make up
for it," said Duncan, who collected 26 points, eight rebounds
and five blocks.
"He's unbelievable," Marbury said. "He's the best player in the
NBA."
The Nets (2-14), who fell to 1-7 at home with their fourth
straight loss overall, had a chance to tie the defending NBA
champions after Duncan traveled with 6.8 seconds left. They
inbounded from midcourt to Keith Van Horn, who got a step on
Duncan and dribbled into the lane.
Marbury curled alongside Van Horn and took a feed from the
forward. But Duncan, trailing the play, soared and blocked
Marbury's shot off the backboard. The rebound bounced to Terry
Porter, who dribbled out the clock.
"I think he (Marbury) was the main option and A.J. (Avery
Johnson) did a good job of cutting him off," Duncan said.
"Keith led me right to him. When he dropped it off, I just kind
of went through."
"That's what makes Tim the player he is. He makes plays like
that," said Spurs center David Robinson, who had season highs of
27 points and 13 rebounds.
San Antonio (14-3) overcame a surprising 10-point first-half
deficit against New Jersey, which played one of its best games
of the season but still came up short. The Spurs improved to
41-14 all-time against the Nets with their first win at
Continental Airlines Arena since March 25, 1996.
"I think New Jersey deserves a lot of credit because they are
undermanned, they don't have all their guys, they played hard,
they executed better than we did," said Spurs coach Gregg
Popovich, whose team began a four-game road trip. "I think we
were really fortunate to win."
"They looked great tonight," Robinson admitted. "They
definitely do not look like a team that has only won a couple
games. We've come to kinda expect that now, because every team
we're playing, they're gonna get up for us."
The Spurs held a 96-88 lead with 2:36 left after two free throws
by Terry Porter, who scored all of his eight points in the
fourth quarter.
But the Nets rallied behind Marbury, who collected 20 points and
a season-high 13 assists. After spending the first three
quarters getting his teammates involved in the offense, he
attacked in the final period.
"We gave a lot of effort against a championship team," Marbury
said. "It has to be that way every night, playing with that
confidence. Guys were hitting their shots and getting to their
spaces."
"I thought Stephon was great tonight in the sense that he
involved his whole basketball team," Popovich said. "He
deserves a lot of credit for sharing the basketball that way and
playing the team game that he played. All great players
evevntually figure out that there are times to take over and
times to involve everybody."
Marbury made a driving layup and set up Jamie Feick for two free
throws that halved the deficit with 49 seconds to go. Duncan
lost the ball out of bounds and Marbury drove again, drawing a
foul and sinking a pair from the line to make it 96-94 with 27
seconds left. Duncan's travel set up the final play.
"This is the way we want to play basketball, to play as well as
we did against a sound team of superstars," said Nets coach Don
Casey, whose job security has been rumored to be in trouble.
"All this is a positive sign."
Johnson helped limit marbury to 7-of-22 shooting and contributed
12 points and seven assists for the Spurs, who shot 49 percent
(35-of-71) from the field and held a 43-38 rebounding advantage.
Van Horn scored 20 points and Kerry Kittles and Lucious Harris
added 14 apiece for the Nets, who shot 42 percent (37-of-89) and
committed only nine turnovers. Former Spur Jamie Feick grabbed
13 rebounds.
At the end of the first quarter, Marbury made a steal and fed
Harris for a layup at the buzzer that gave New Jersey a 25-24
lead. The Spurs opened the second period by going scoreless for
3:23 and without a basket for 5:40 as the Nets surged ahead.
"Usually our shooters pick it up," Robinson said. "Tonight it
didn't happen."
San Antonio shot just 4-of-20 in the second quarter, matching
the total baskets scored in the period by Harris, a reserve. A
free throw by Marbury, who had eight assists in the first half,
gave New Jersey its largest lead at 46-36 with 45 seconds before
halftime.
"Against a team like that, you just got to bury them when you
have them on the ropes," Marbury said. "They started out very
lethargic. They weren't hitting shots, but then the second half
came and they're not not going to shoot bad forever."
The Spurs shot 0-of-7 from 3-point range in the first half but
found their touch in the third quarter. They took the lead for
good at 60-59 on two free throws by Robinson with 3:18 left
before Mario Elie made a 3-pointer and Jaren Jackson sank two,
extending tyhe advantage to 69-64.
A three-point play by Van Horn cut the deficit to 77-76 with
9:23 to go, but San Antonio responded with nine straight points.
Duncan scored the first four and Jackson fed Robinson for a dunk
before drilling another 3-pointer for an 86-76 bulge with 7:17
remaining.
