Game Story
ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Isaiah Rider scored 13 of his season-high 32
points in the decisive third quarter as the Atlanta Hawks cooled
off the Sacramento Kings with a 110-100 victory, despite
allowing 42 points in the first period.
Rider, who was 13-of-30 from the field, helped Atlanta erase a
73-60 deficit early in the second half, completing a three-point
play with 23 seconds remaining in the third quarter to put the
Hawks ahead, 84-83.
"We woke up as a team," Rider said. "We started out really
sluggish. I take some of the blame for that. I came out
flat-lined a little bit.
"I thought I threw us out of our rhythm a little bit and on top
of that, they were running. We weren't getting back (on
defense). As a team after the first quarter, we put a stop to
some of those things."
Sacramento went up 87-84 on baskets by Lawrence Funderburke and
Chris Webber. But Atlanta took the lead for good at 89-87 on Jim
Jackson's dunk with 8:14 remaining and slowly pulled away in the
final minutes. The final score represented the Hawks' biggest
cushion.
"I thought it was a big win," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said.
"We played a good team and I think for us to continue the growth
process we're in, this was huge. I didn't want us to quit when
we got down. We kept pushing and we talked about it at
halftime."
After Roshown McLeod's three-point play gave the Hawks a 94-87
lead with 6:45 to play, the Kings pulled within 96-92 on Jason
Williams' driving layup with 5:38 to play.
But Rider answered with a 21-footer 11 seconds later and Dikembe
Mutombo added a pair from the line and a hook in the lane to
make it 102-92 with 4:02 left.
"Anybody can beat anybody in this NBA game," Rider said. "We're
all talented. We're all here for a reason, so it depends on
heart and determinaton a lot of time. And tonight we had
heart."
Jackson finished with 26 points while Mutombo added 19 and 18
rebounds for Atlanta, which has won six of eight following a 1-7
start.
"At times tonight, we still turned the ball over in critical
situations but I also think at times tonight we looked like a
very, very good basketball team," Jackson said. "Now we're just
trying to have that consistency throughout four quarters instead
of just two."
The defeat prevented Sacramento (10-3) from matching the 1948-49
Rochester Royals for the best start in franchise history. The
Kings lost for only the second time in 11 games since splitting
a season-opening two-game series in Japan against the Minnesota
Timberwolves.
Sacramento shot a stunning 79 percent (19-of-24) in the opening
quarter and raced to a 42-28 lead. But the Kings could not
maintain their blistering pace, scoring 58 points over the final
three periods.
"They played a good game in the second half," Sacramento coach
Rick Adelman said. "They shot the ball extremely well. We had
some shots that we didn't knock down. They got the momentum
going their way. Give them credit. Rider got hot in the second
half and played well."
Chris Webber had 26 points and 10 rebounds and Williams added 18
points for the Kings, who have lost the last eight meetings with
the Hawks. Webber has led Sacramento in scoring in all but two
games this season.
"It's just one of those things that happens," Williams said.
"We just have to keep our heads together for 48 minutes instead
of 30 to beat good teams on the road."
Mutombo hit a hook shot to give the Hawks their last lead of the
first half at 13-11 with 7:55 remaining in the opening period.
His six-footer pulled Atlanta within 31-28 with 2:32 remaining,
but Sacramento scored the last 11 points of the quarter to open
a 14-point advantage.
"Sacramento is a good team," Rider said. "They proved it last
year by going to the playoffs and from the start this year.
They've proved that they're one of the elites in the West."
The Kings finished at just 41 percent from the field, making
41-of-101 shots, including 22-of-77 over the final three
periods.
"We had some shots that we didn't knock down," Adelman said.
"They got the momentum going their way. Give them credit. We
didn't sustain it over the 48 minutes like we needed to."
Alan Henderson had 10 rebounds for Atlanta, which attempted 14
fewer field goals than Sacramento but shot 52 percent
(45-of-87).
