Game Story
WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Shawn Kemp laughed his way to the foul line, where he made 15-of-17 shots. The Washington Wizards cried their way to their 11th setback in 16 games, a 111-108 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
"I tried to get inside and get them in foul trouble early on," said Kemp, who finished with 27 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals while bullying the Wizards in the paint. "Ike Austin and Juwan Howard both got hurt. I didn't want to see that because they're both good guys.
"Sometimes that strategy doesn't work, but tonight it did. That was a very physical game, but I've played long enough to know not to let my frustrations get to me. I had a lot of fun out there tonight."
Kemp made only 6-of-18 shots but was nearly perfect from the line.
"I'm shooting about 80 or 82 percent," he said. "So if I shoot 10 or 12 free throws a night and stay up in the 80 percents, then I can take advantage of these new rule changes."
Kemp's hot hand spoiled a season-high 30-point performance by Wizards guard Mitch Richmond, who hit 8-of-15 shots and 12-of-14 free throws in his best game of the season.
"That was a winnable game for us," said Richmond, who pulled the Wizards within 109-107 on a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left. "And we just didn't get it done. We didn't get enough offensive rebounds and our offense kind of bogged down in the fourth quarter.
"They came down and basically did anything they wanted to. And Shawn Kemp got to the line a lot. He got to the line a whole lot. Down the stretch, they got him the ball and they got a couple rebounds that really put a dagger in us. But that was a game we should've put away a long time ago."
The Wizards (5-11) led 30-22 after one quarter, but the Cavaliers (8-6) went on a 21-7 run to begin the second period, capped by Wesley Person's 3-pointer that opened a 43-37 lead with 4:49 left in the half. Brevin Knight, who had 14 points and six assists, threw in a buzzer-beater to put Cleveland ahead, 56-51, at halftime.
The game became very physical in the third period as Cavs Bob Sura, Mark Bryant and Kemp all were whistled for technical fouls. However, it was Cleveland cashing in at the line while Wizards big men Austin (sprained right ankle) and Howard (elbow to the groin) were reeling.
"They shot 53 [free throws], we shot 41," Wizards coach Gar Heard said. "That's a lot of fouls. It's not so much that a lot of them were called, but I think some of them were very questionable. It seemed that like every time down, if they didn't score, they'd get to the free-throw line -- especially in the second half.
"We're too friendly," Heard added. "We're kind of `I won't hurt you, don't you hurt me' type of guys instead of just going out and saying 'I'm going to do whatever it takes to win.'"
After Kemp gave Clevelend a 104-97 lead with two free throws with 1:03 remaining, Washington still had chances to win. Richmond hit a layup with 58 seconds left, pulling the Wizards to 104-99. He added two free throws with 43 seconds remaining, pulling them to 105-101.
Knight hit two free throws with 33 seconds to go and Howard answered with a three-point play with 25.2 seconds left, pulling Washington within 107-104.
After Howard's free throw, Wesley Person beat the Wizards to the other end for an uncontested layup and a 109-104 lead with 19 seconds left. Richmond drained a 3-pointer five seconds later.
Kemp made another free throw with 13 seconds left for a 110-107 lead before finally missing one. Inexplicably, the Wizards passed on a 3-pointer and Rod Strickland drove and pased to Howard, who drew a foul with 5.3 seconds to play. He made his first and intentionally missed the second, which Sura grabbed.
Sura had 18 points and five rebounds, Person scored 16 points and Bryant added 15 for Cleveland, which shot 43 percent (33-of-76) from the field.
Howard and Tracy Murray each scored 15 points apiece for the Wizards, who shot 46 percent (38-of-82). Michael Smith grabbed 11 rebounds.
