Game Story
MIAMI (Ticker) -- The emergence of Anthony Carter helped the
Miami Heat without Tim Hardaway overcome the Philadelphia 76ers
without Allen Iverson.
With both star guards sidelined, Carter took charge down the
stretch and lifted the Heat to their fourth straight victory,
90-83 over the 76ers.
Starting his fourth straight game in place of Hardaway, Carter
collected seven points and eight assists. The undrafted free
agent had a crucial layup, assist and a pair of free throws down
the stretch as Miami held off pesky Philadelphia.
Prior to the game, Hardaway was placed on the injured list with
a jammed right knee. He has hardly been missed as the Heat have
yet to lose with Carter, a 6-1 rookie from Hawaii, sharing the
point guard duties with Rex Walters.
"I haven't been in many situations in crunch time," Carter said.
"The last couple of times he (coach Pat Riley) didn't have me
in. This was a decision he made and I think it was a good one.
We came out with a win. He found out that I was ready for the
situation tonight and he kept me in."
Miami improved to 12-3, the best start in franchise history. The
Heat got off to an 11-4 start in 1995-96, Riley's first season
as Miami coach.
Iverson has a broken thumb and missed his fifth straight game.
The NBA scoring champion is not expected back until Christmas
but the 76ers had won three in a row without him until tonight.
The Sixers cut a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to 82-80 with
just under three minutes to go. Carter responded with a driving
layup and Jamal Mashburn made a long jumper to rebuild Miami's
lead to 86-80 with 2:09 left.
Philadelphia's Bruce Bowen made a free throw and Tyrone Hill
scored from the baseline to cut the deficit to three points with
53 seconds left.
Miami nearly threw away the ball before Carter drove and whipped
a behind-the-back pass to Alonzo Mourning, who scored and was
fouled with 32 seconds to go.
"It was a pretty good play," Carter said. "I drove to the
basket. (Mourning's) man came to me and I saw him wide open. I
threw it behind my back and he finished it."
"He had a sporadic game," Riley said. "He's good when the
pressure's on. AC moved around the picks in the lane and had a
couple of good drives. I thought that behind-the-back pass late
in the game was the only pass he could have done."
Mourning's missed free throw went off Philadelphia and Carter
made two foul shots eight seconds later to seal the win, its
10th in the last 12 meetings between the clubs.
"The Heat made two great plays at the end of the game," Sixers
coach Larry Brown said. "We had a great opportunity to win. ...
We had our chances. We had a good opportunity, but they just
got it done at the end."
Mourning was dominant with 28 points, 15 rebounds and seven
blocks. P.J. Brown had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Mashburn
scored 11 points for Miami, which shot 45 percent (33-of-73)
from the field and held a 44-36 rebounding edge.
"The points, they'll come," Mourning said. "The things that
matters the most is the blocks and the rebounds. Those you have
to work for."
Hill and Aaron McKie scored 20 points apiece and McKie added
nine assists for Philadelphia, which shot 42 percent (33-of-78).
Hill grabbed eight rebounds and McKie pulled down seven.
"From the point guard all the way down to the 12th man, everyone
wants to win," Hill said. "We're trying to win games until
everyone gets healthy, when Al and Matt (Geiger) get back."
Carter fed Erick Strickland for a layup that gave the Heat a
42-32 lead midway through the second quarter. McKie scored
seven points in a 12-2 spurt that closed the first half and
pulled the Sixers into a 44-44 tie.
"I felt confident all the way through the game and let it flow,"
Carter said. "Once you let it flow, it happens better."
A three-point play by Mashburn triggered an 8-0 burst that gave
Miami the lead for good at 58-50 with 7:23 left in the third
quarter. The Heat led 68-62 entering the fourth quarter and
built a 76-66 bulge on Voshon Lenard's basket with 8:55 to go
before the Sixers made their final surge.
"The second half was better," Riley said. "We had better ball
movement, defense and rebounding. All of our turnovers in the
first half were on individual moves."
Mashburn scored 11 points for Miami. Hughes and Eric Snow had
10 apiece for Philadelphia.
"We kept battling back even though we had a couple of key
players that struggled during the game," Brown said.
