Game Story
TORONTO (Ticker) -- Isaiah Rider had 23 points, eight rebounds and six assists and Alan Henderson and Dikembe Mutombo contributed to a balanced offensive attack as the Atlanta Hawks posted an easy 107-89 victory over the Toronto Raptors.
The Hawks, who won for just the second time in 10 road contests this season, shot 54 percent (43-of-79) from the field. They led by as many as 22 points in the first half and turned away the Toronto's only second-half threat by scoring six straight points.
Jimmy Jackson scored 15 points and Lorenzen Wright, Roshown McLeod and Henderson added 13 apiece for Atlanta. Henderson had 10 rebounds and Mutombo also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Antonio Davis led Toronto with 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Raptors shot just 38 percent (36-of-95) and have split their last six games after a 6-3 start.
Toronto got within 20-15 following a six-footer by Carter with 5:16 left in the opening quarter but Rider buried a 3-pointer eight seconds later. Jackson converted a layup with 4:43 to go and Rider sank a 19-footer to push the lead to 27-15.
Dee Brown had a pair of baskets for Toronto but Rider sank a free throw with 2:58 remaining and Henderson had a layup. Jackson put the Hawks up 32-19 with an 18-footer from the left wing before Bimbo Coles capped the run with a jumper from the right corner.
"That had to be our biggest first quarter," Rider said. "We came out and played real hard. If you give them a start they can hurt you. We played great defense in the first quarter."
"We came out flat for some reason and they shot well," Brown said. "Our whole thing is to be ahead after the first quarter. Tonight, that wasn't the case."
The Raptors got within 45-37 with six minutes left in the opening half but Wright had a three-point play and McLeod broke free for a layup. Kevin Willis was whistled for a technical foul on the play and Rider made the free throw for a 51-37 cushion with 5:14 to go.
Mutombo had a dunk off a feed from rookie Jason Terry, who then found McLeod for a driving layup that put the Hawks on top, 55-37. Wright gave Atlanta its biggest lead of the half, 61-39, with a dunk with 75 seconds remaining.
Rider scored 15 points and Jackson 12 in the opening half. The Hawks shot 57 percent (25-of-44) and outrebounded the Raptors, 30-20, over the opening 24 minutes.
"We came out ready and had great ball movement," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We defended early and were able to jump on them."
"Our good start was because of focus and we were able to keep the crowd out of the game," Jackson said. "We are definitely meshing to become a better team."
The Raptors last gasp came when a Brown 3-pointer sliced the deficit to 94-83 with 5:41 to go. McLeod responded with a 10-footer from the right side, Wright hit a reverse layup and Mutombo grabbed an offensive rebound and dunked with four minutes left.
