Game Story
PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The Portland Trail Blazers have one
of the NBA's deepest teams. Tonight, it was the bench of the
Indiana Pacers that made the difference in the fourth quarter.
Travis Best scored nine points in the fourth quarter, including
a pair of free throws down the stretch, as the Pacers handed the
Trail Blazers their first home loss of the season, 93-91.
The game was tight throughout but the Pacers used a 6-1 run in
the final period, capped by Dale Davis' jumper with just over
four minutes remaining, to take a 90-84 lead.
Scottie Pippen scored five straight points to bring the Blazers
within one, but Best sank a pair of free throws to push the lead
to three with 19 seconds left. After Damon Stoudamire hit a
short jumper, Jalen Rose made 1-of-2 from the line with 13
seconds to play to make it 93-91.
Following a timeout, Pippen missed a foul-line jumper that would
have tied it but the ball caromed off Davis out of bounds.
Reggie Miller stole Pippen's ensuing inbounds pass with under
two seconds left and dribbled out the clock.
Austin Croshere also helped out off the Indiana bench, scoring
12 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Led by Best and Croshere,
the Pacers' reserves outscored the Portland bench, 33-21
Rose scored 22 points and Davis finished with 15 and 12 rebounds
for Indiana, which has split the first two games of a four-game
road trip.
"Obviously it's a big win on the road against a team that was
undefeated at home, against a team that many think and feel are
going to do great things in the playoffs," Rose said. "We've
been playing .500 basketball up-and-down in search of itself.
Hopefully this can start a run."
Rasheed Wallace tallied 20 points and 11 rebounds and Pippen had
20 and 10 for Portland, which lost for the first time in six
home games and for just the third time in 16 games overall.
"We have been flirting with disaster for some time now," said
Portland coach Mike Dunleavy. "We let somebody hang around and
with a good experienced team like Indiana, you are going to get
beat. That's what I told them after the game."
"We have gotten so much attention already," Pippen said. "Teams
are coming in loaded up for us and they are just coming out and
playing hard and giving us tough games."
Although one of the NBA's biggest clubs, the Blazers managed
only a 46-45 rebounding edge. Indiana was able to stay
virtually even on the boards despite getting just five rebounds
from 7-4 center Rik Smits, who played just 16 minutes.
"We haven't been playing well. But tonight we played hard,
unselfish, battled on the boards," Indiana coach Larry Bird
said. "We played as well tonight as we have all year. There are
no secrets. If you play with desire and play hard, you will win
a lot of games. There is enough talent on this team."
Rebounding was not the only thing that was tight. The Blazers
took their biggest lead of seven points with under five minutes
left in the first quarter. Indiana led by as many as eight in
the second period and 48-44 at halftime.
In the second half, neither team led by more than six points.
Miller added 15 points for Indiana, but had a forgettable night
from the floor, making just 2-of-11 shots. He did make 9-of-11
attempts from the free throw line.
"I'm still the go-to guy on this team," Miller said. "I don't
care if I go 0-for-20. The ball better be in my hands at the end
of the game. If the ball is not going to be in my hands, I
shouldn't be around here."
Portland, which was outscored in the paint, 36-20, shot 40
percent (33-of-83) while the Pacers finished at 38 percent
(32-of-85).
