Game Story
NEW YORK (Ticker) -- For one night, Charlie Ward and Kurt Thomas turned into offensive forces.
Ward and Thomas combined for 45 points on blistering shooting as the New York Knicks coasted to a 107-82 rout of the Dallas Mavericks, who suffered their seventh straight road loss.
Both Ward and Thomas entered the contest averaging fewer than 10 points per game but looked nothing like those players tonight, combining to hit 18-of-23 shots from the floor.
Ward scored a career-high 25 points, connecting on 8-of-9 shots, including 7-of-8 from 3-point range. He had 17 points in the third quarter, drilling five shots from beyond the arc in the period. His previous career high was 19 points on March 19, 1998 against Portland.
"I was wide open, so I kept shooting and they kept going in," Ward said. "In other games, I have not been that open all the time as much as I was tonight. I tried to do the best I can because some night's are going to be good and some are going to be bad.
"You never thought of me being the guy to have the hot hand. It was different and I just have to have fun with it."
John Starks holds the club record for 3-pointers in a game with nine against Milwaukee on January 29, 1998.
While Ward did his damage in the second half, Thomas did his the opening 24 minutes, scoring 14 of his season-high 20 points as the Knicks built a 56-31 advantage at halftime and led by as many as 35 points in the second half. A former Maverick, Thomas hit 10-of-14 shots.
"You have to get some inside scoring. I thought Kurt did that," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "He made a couple of jump shots and got some scores inside."
Michael Finley scored 20 points to lead Dallas, which has lost six of its last seven games after splitting its first eight contests.
"We were awful. I think their defense had a lot to do with that," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "But this was the worst game we have played. It was a difficult night for everybody."
The Knicks trailed 10-9 midway through the first quarter before Thomas made consecutive baskets to put Knicks ahead for good. He scored 12 points over the final 5 1/2 minutes of the period as the lead grew to 29-18.
New York continued to roll in the second quarter and extended the lead to 40-22 with 6:38 to play before intermission when rookie DeMarco Johnson converted a layup.
It was nightmare of a second quarter for the Mavericks, who hit only 16 percent of their shots (4-of-25). They shot 35 percent (31-of-88) overall.
"They just got it going and we did not," said Mavs center Shawn Bradley. "The guys felt pretty good coming into the game tonight. But we just got a good old fashioned whuppin'. It's like someone took you behind the bar and taught you a thing or two. That's what New York did to us tonight."
Cedric Ceballos, who entered the game as the Dallas' second leading scorer at 17.2 points per contest, was a key contributor to that disastrous percentage, making just 1-of-9 shots in the quarter. He finished 3-of-20 from the floor with 10 points.
Latrell Sprewell and Allan Houston added 15 points apiece for New York, which shot 51 percent (46-of-90) and held a 52-38 rebounding advantage.
Already without starting point guard Robert Pack, the Mavs also lost Erick Strickland late in the first quarter when he suffered a sprained left shoulder while diving for a loose ball. It is uncertain how long he will be sidelined.
