Game Story
SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan can't be
very happy.
Sloan criticized his club after a listless performance Wednesday
at the Staples Center, then watched them fade down the stretch
tonight and suffer consecutive setbacks for the first time this
season with a 100-87 loss to the Toronto Raptors.
Sloan questioned his club's desire after a 90-82 loss to the Los
Angeles Lakers on Wednesday in which Utah scored a season-low 29
first-half points. He even suggested that his club had a "list
of excuses" for their poor play.
Tonight, Utah did not fall apart until the second half when it
managed just 18 third-quarter points before being outscored
27-16 over the final 12 minutes.
"We didn't have the energy evidently in the second half because
they controlled pretty much every thing that was going on,"
Sloan said. "But it's really sad when you see guys come out
there and hustle sticks out like a sore thumb."
Vince Carter scored eight of his 18 points in the fourth quarter
for the Raptors, who snapped out of a two-game funk by posting
their second win in seven meetings with the Jazz.
"Tonight's game was really a team effort," Carter said. "We got
good play from everyone when I was getting off to a slow start.
It was a really good team effort at time when we really needed
one."
Tracy McGrady scored 17 points off the bench for Toronto, which
opened the final period with a decisive 10-2 run to open an
83-73 cushion.
Reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone collected 24
points and 13 rebounds for the Jazz. Malone moved within four
points of Michael Jordan (29,276) for third place on the
all-time scoring list.
The night got off to a good enough start for the Jazz as they
opened a 19-11 lead with 4:27 left in the first quarter behind
nine points by Malone. But Toronto reeled off 18 of the next 20
points to silence the Delta Center and take a 29-21 lead into
the second quarter.
Doug Christie scored 15 points, Dell Curry had 12 and Charles
Oakley and Kevin Willis added 10 apiece for Toronto, which
recovered nicely from Wednesday's 109-84 blowout loss at Denver.
"After kind of letting down in Phoenix and then going into
Denver and catching them on four days rest, this was really big
for us," Christie said. "We have a certain amount of goals we
set for ourselves and we really needed to get one tonight and to
come in here and beat the Jazz is really big for us."
John Stockton had 16 points and eight assists and Jeff Hornacek
had 12 for Utah, which shot 40 percent (35-of-88) and was
outscored by a whopping 31-14 margin at the line.
"Well, we're just not playing very well," Stockton said. "That's
pretty obvious. I think execution would breed enthusiasm. But
what comes first, the chicken or the egg We didn't have that
answer tonight."
Malone appeared to be the only Utah player interested in drawing
contact, going 8-of-12 at the stripe. His teammates were just
6-of-10.
The Raptors shot 48 percent (33-of-69) and held a 46-36
advantage on the boards.
The Jazz did challenge in the second and third quarters and
pulled within 73-71 entering the fourth period. But Carter made
a 22-footer and Willis followed with a hook shot in the lane to
make it 77-71 with just under nine minutes to play.
"Well, we just couldn't contain them," Sloan said. "We couldn't
execute anything, we took tough shots. When you don't execute
and you just try to score to get yourself going, I think that's
what we've done the past couple of games -- come out and just
take shots."
Olden Polynice answered with a short jumper, but Carter framed
Curry's layup with a pair of 21-footers to open an 83-73 bulge
with 6:04 remaining.
"I'm sorry guys, I don't want to say something I'll be sorry for
later," Polynice told the media. "So if you'll excuse me, I
really don't have any comment on tonight's performance."
