Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Darrell Armstrong had a career year last season. But he never enjoyed a night like tonight.
Armstrong had career highs of 33 points and 14 assists as the Orlando Magic avenged an earlier loss to the Dallas Mavericks with a 112-100 victory.
Armstrong, who earned the NBA's Most Improved Player and Sixth Man awards last season, surpassed his previous career high of 28 points, established on March 23 against Charlotte.
The energetic point guard had 22 points by halftime, helping the Magic to a 61-49 advantage. He finished 12-of-20 from the field, making 6-of-11 attempts from 3-point range.
"You've got to keep the mindset of a point guard and the mindset of a shooter," Armstrong said. "Because if you're hot, you've got to look to the basket. There's no reason to get hot and then quit looking at it. You've got to stay aggressive sometimes."
Chris Gatling added 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Magic, who suffered a 125-117 loss at Dallas on November 13.
"That was a nice win, obviously," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "It put us at .500, so that was a really important win for us."
Michael Finley netted a season-best 35 points and Dirk Nowitzki had 20 for the Mavs, who suffered their fifth straight loss.
The Magic had an eight-point lead after three quarters and scored the first seven points of the final period, opening their biggest lead at 88-73 following Pat Garrity's driving layup with 10:25 remaining.
But the Mavericks would not go away and embarked on a 15-4 surge to get back into it, capped by a layup by Nowitzki that cut the deficit to four with 4:16 to play.
Nowitzki connected on 8-of-13 shots while pulling down nine rebounds.
The Mavs were still within 104-100 with less than a minute to go. But Tariq Abdul-Wahad hit 1-of-2 free throws and, after a turnover, Armstrong put an exclamation point on the win with a reverse dunk.
Abdul-Wahad also had a strong game, finishing with 16 points, as the Magic shot 46 percent (43-of-93). They also had a 47-41 rebounding edge.
Due to injuries, Dallas was forced to rely heavily on Finley, who connected on 15-of-34 shots. The Mavs were without point guard Robert Pack and forward Cedric Ceballos.
Dallas shot 45 percent (41-of-92) and committed 25 turnovers.
"Fatigue was a factor, we could not play the way we wanted to," Mavs coach Don Nelson said. "We had trouble handling the ball, and we don't have a point guard, and they (Orlando) capitalized on that. Our turnover ratio was way too much. We don't turn the ball over too much, it's unlike us, but there's a reason for it."
