Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Someone finally slowed down Kevin Garnett.
Damon Stoudamire keyed a third-quarter run and the Portland Trail Blazers put the clamps on Garnett in an 88-81 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Trailing by three points midway through the third quarter, the Trail Blazers used a 12-1 burst to take control. Stoudamire, who finished with 18 points, scored 10 in the decisive run.
Garnett, the Wolves' 23-year-old superstar, entered the game in top five in the NBA in scoring and rebounding. He was held to 11 points on 4-of-24 shooting but did grab 19 rebounds.
"(Rasheed Wallace) did a great job for us," Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We had to give a lot of help on Garnett, but he really gave a great effort defensively against him. We were focusing in on him and really getting to him -- and give a lot of credit to Rasheed."
Asked about the matchup with Wallace, Garnett said, "Sometimes I over-focus. Tonight I focused on Wallace. I worried too much about him and it got me frustrated. That was part of the reason I wasn't as productive on offense. I just couldn't get into the flow.
"This is part of the immaturity in my game. Some nights I can take games over and other nights I have to do things to be productive, like rebound and distribute the ball."
Steve Smith also scored 18 points for the Blazers, who rebounded from their second loss of the season and picked up their league-leading 11th win.
Rookie Wally Szczerbiak had a season-high 26 points and Terrell Brandon added 22 for Minnesota, which has dropped consecutive games for the first time this season.
The Timberwolves took a 51-48 lead with 7:03 left in the third quarter after Brandon drilled a long 3-pointer. But it went downhill from there.
Arvydas Sabonis sank two free throws and Stoudamire followed with a 3-pointer that put the Blazers ahead for good. Radoslav Nesterovic made 1-of-2 from the line for Minnesota before Stoudamire, who scored 16 points in the period, hit a jumper and 3-pointer for a 60-52 lead with 3:14 left in the third quarter.
Stoudamire connected on 7-of-13 shots, handed out nine assists and grabbed seven rebounds.
"It was just one of those things. My teammates were getting me tha ball, and I was getting in good spots. It was just flowing," Stoudamire said of his big quarter.
Greg Anthony's 3-pointer with 7:57 left gave Portland its biggest lead at 72-58.
The Wolves pulled within six on Szczerbiak's three-point play with 2 1/2 minutes to play. But Scottie Pippen, who missed his first nine shots, drained a 3-pointer to give the Blazers all the breathing room they needed.
Each team struggled mightily from the floor. The Blazers shot 38 percent (29-of-76), while Minnesota finished at just 34 percent (33-of-97).
Szczerbiak enjoyed the best shooting night of his young career, making 9-of-13 field goals.
