Game Story
LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Utah Jazz got better after a
dreadful first half but never good enough to overcome Shaquille
O'Neal and the Los Angeles Lakers.
O'Neal had 39 points and 18 rebounds and Glen Rice scored all of
his 21 points in the second half as the Lakers defeated the Jazz
for the second time this season, 90-82.
Utah entered the contest in search of its first three-game
winning streak of the campaign and revenge for a season-opening
loss to the Lakers at the Delta Center. But the Jazz did not
appear up to the challenge over the first 24 minutes, making
12-of-39 shots and committing eight turnovers en route to a
season-low 29 first-half points.
"We just fell apart," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "We didn't
come to really compete against them all night long. You ask
those guys, see what excuse they give you this time. I'm sure
they have a list of them."
Although the Jazz came out with resolve in the second half,
O'Neal and Rice proved too much for them down the stretch.
"Shaq had a wonderful game," Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson
said. "I think its one of the best games I have seen him play
overall."
O'Neal, who averaged 37 points and 18 rebounds in his previous
four games, actually improved on those numbers tonight. He was
14-of-24 from the floor and even shot better than 50 percent
from the line with an 11-of-20 performance.
"I'm the baddest big man, you know," O'Neal said.
Rice appeared better suited for a Utah uniform in the first
half, missing four shots in 19 minutes with two turnovers. But
the sharpshooting swingman turned it on after intermission,
making 5-of-7 shots and 10-of-13 free throws.
John Stockton's 3-pointer pulled Utah within 71-70 with 5:56 to
play, but Rice spoiled any hopes of a come-from-behind victory.
The 6-8, 220-pounder sank a 20-footer and a 3-pointer on
consecutive trips to give Los Angeles a 76-70 lead with 4:44
remaining.
"I really felt that I had to turn it up," Rice said. "I was
sitting back a little too much. The game was getting too close
and I had to step up and give my team a hand."
"It's all about concentration and being ready to play and doing
the things that you need to do every night," Stockton said.
"We're not at that point yet."
Lakers forward A.C. Green managed only four points in 34 minutes
tonight, but broke Ron Boone's professional record by playing in
his 1,041st consecutive game. Green did have a strong game on
the boards with 10 rebounds.
"It's a big game. The play streak is nice, but to play (the
Jazz) is challenge," Green said.
"This was quite a hallmark game for (Green)," Jackson added. "I
told him it was quite an honor with him tonight. A.C. is a big
guy that has been able to be durable. He can play a hard and
physical game and still survive."
Karl Malone led Utah with 22 points and 12 rebounds but did not
receive much support from his teammates. He had 11 of the
Jazz's 29 first-half points, making five of their 12 field
goals.
Jeff Hornacek scored 14 points and Stockton and Bryon Russell
added 13 apiece for Utah, which shot 38 percent (30-of-80) and
yielded 17 points off turnovers.
"It's been up and down for us," Hornacek said. "For whatever
reason we have spurts where we play well, but for the most part
it's one game we're bad and one game we're good and that's where
we're at."
Derek Fisher collected 14 points for Los Angeles, which shot 48
percent (31-of-64) and held a 44-40 advantage on the boards.
The Lakers entered the fourth quarter with a comfortable 68-56
lead. But Russell made a steal and went in for a slam to open
the scoring in the final period, sparking Utah to a 14-3 run
capped by Stockton's 26-footer with 5:56 left.
Rick Fox scored four points, accounting for all of the Lakers'
offense off the bench.
"We controlled the pace of the game, but we obviously didn't get
a lot of bench support. We just didn't have a good bench game."
