Game Story
PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Toronto Raptors guard Doug Christie left the
door open by missing a pair of crucial free throws with 5.1
seconds to play and Phoenix Suns guard Jason Kidd walked through
it -- literally.
Kidd received a gift call from officials after getting hung up
in the lane, enabling him to sink a pair of free throws with 1.3
left as the Suns rallied for their fourth straight victory,
94-93, over Toronto.
"What a way to lose the game," Christie said. "We had one of
our best free-throw shooters at the line and they just didn't go
in. I don't remember the last time I missed two in a row. It's
been a long time."
"Obviously, we were very fortunate to win," Phoenix coach Danny
Ainge said.
Kidd scored 16 points and handed out a season-high 15 assists
for the Suns, who denied the Raptors a chance to move a
team-record five games over .500.
Toronto appeared to have matters well in hand after Vince Carter
knocked down a 17-footer with 1:22 to play, giving the Raptors a
93-86 cushion.
But Kidd made four free throws and backcourt mate Penny Hardaway
sank a nine-footer to cut the deficit to 93-92 with 14 seconds
to play. Forced to foul, Phoenix put Christie on the line with
five seconds remaining and the 78 percent free-throw shooter
clanged a pair off the rim.
"Every once in a while I miss one. For God's sake, I missed
both of them," Christie said. "When I got fouled I said, `Thank
God, I'm gonna knock these down.' The first one I thought was
good but rattled out. The second one I thought was good, too,
but it went right. I couldn't believe it."
The Suns set up Kidd on the ensuing inbounds and the cagey point
guard dribbled down the left sideline before going baseline into
a trio of defenders. Kidd took several steps and appeared to
have nowhere to go when officials blew a whistle on forward
Antonio Davis, who appeared to make incidental contact with the
out-of-control point guard.
"Antonio fouled me," Kidd said. "My first option was I was
going to shoot the jump shot, 'cause I knew Christie didn't want
me to get to the basket. But in those situations, you've got to
take the ball to the basket. And if you get fouled, you make
your free throws."
"It seems to me we're not even in that position if we make two
of the last three plays that we had," Toronto coach Butch Carter
said. "It was just one little play at the end."
Kidd calmly stepped to the line and made his free throws. Vince
Carter missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer as the
Raptors were denied their third straight win.
Hardaway scored 17 points and Tom Gugliotta added 16 for
Phoenix, which improved to 6-1 at home.
"We gave the lead back in the middle of the fourth quarter and
we fought back," Gugliotta said. "Any win is good, but to come
back like this showed a lot."
Carter finished with 19 points for Toronto, which slipped to 3-2
on the road. Davis and Dee Brown had 12 points apiece for the
Raptors, who shot 42 percent (38-of-89) and scored 30 points off
21 turnovers.
Kevin Willis scored six of his 15 points for Toronto during a
13-2 burst to open the fourth quarter. Dell Curry capped the
run with his specialty, a 3-pointer that gave the Raptors an
83-75 advantage with 8:02 to play.
Rodney Rogers contributed 14 points off the bench and backup
forward Cliff Robinson added 11 for Phoenix, which shot 47
percent (36-of-76) and held a 42-41 advantage on the boards.
The Suns showed their superiority inside by outscoring the
Raptors in the paint, 46-26.
Kidd and Hardaway grabbed seven rebounds apiece for the Suns,
who also held a 16-8 edge in second-chance points.
Christie finished with 10 points on 3-of-10 shooting. He buried
his first four free-throw attempts before missing the most
important ones of the night.
"Doug is a good free-throw shooter," Butch Carter said. "I told
him I won so many games with him, it's just the nature of the
beast. We should have been in a better position in the fourth
quarter, down the stretch."
The game featured 10 lead changes and five ties. The Raptors
held a 26-22 lead after one quarter and opened a 53-47 bulge at
halftime.
But Carter scored eight points in the third period as Toronto
closed within 73-70 entering the final quarter.
