Game Story
CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- The Cleveland Cavaliers squandered a
20-point second-quarter lead but used a strong shooting
performance to became the second team to defeat the Portland
TrailBlazers this season, 103-100.
Shawn Kemp had 28 points and 10 rebounds and Lamond Murray
scored 20 points for Cleveland, which shot 50 percent
(38-for-76) from the floor and 85 percent from the line
(23-for-27).
Murray, playing just his third game and making his first start
since suffering a sprained left MCL in a preseason game, made
7-of-13 shots.
The Cavaliers had lost their last three games, blowing halftime
leads twice.
"That was a heckuva game," said Cleveland coach Randy Wittman.
"I think the main thing that I was pleased about tonight was
more of how we played in the first six games of the year in
terms of intensity, our abilty to withstand runs and not revert
back and fold up the tent at the other end."
Cleveland had a 49-29 lead when rookie Andre Miller tipped in
Murray's miss with 5:29 left in the second period. Portland
chipped away, finally taking a 67-66 lead when Damon
Stoudamire's 3-pointer capped a 10-3 surge with 1:29 left in the
third quarter.
"I think our guys on our team are tired of losing," Miller said.
"We lost three games in a row. We just wanted to stop their
runs in the third quarter, and we did that."
Brevin Knight, who had 11 points and 12 assists, answered with a
15-footer to trigger an 8-0 burst to end the period. But the
Trail Blazers tied it four times in the final quarter before
Murray's 3-pointer put Cleveland ahead for good, 96-93, with
1:30 to go.
"He gave us a big lift, no question. He hit a big three down at
the end of the game and to come in after basically not doing
anything since October 16, for the third game back I'm
completely satisfied for him to give us a 20-point game,"
Wittman said of Murray.
Detlef Schrempf led Portland with 23 points off the bench,
making 4-of-6 shots from the field and 13-of-14 free throws.
Steve Smith scored 18 points and Rasheed Wallace added 16 and
eight rebounds for Portland, which shot just 40 percent
(35-for-88) and had a six-game winning streak snapped.
"We came out soft and we paid the price," said Blazers coach
Mike Dunleavy. "We settled for some jump shots early, we let
them build up a really big lead. We let them get their
confidence to where they played hard late in the game. They made
seven straight jump shots and they did a good job of finishing
us out."
Stoudamire had 12 points and 10 assists for the Blazers but
missed a running jumper in the lane after Murray's 3-pointer.
Kemp, who picked up his fifth foul with 7:40 left, grabbed the
rebound and hit a 21-footer at the other end to give the
Cavaliers a 98-93 lead with 49 seconds to go. Kemp followed
with two free throws to make it 100-93.
Portland cut the deficit to 102-100 when Wallace made a layup
with 10.5 seconds left. Miller, who had 12 points, made one
free throw one second later. But Portland failed to tie as
Schrempf and Wallace missed 3-pointers in the closing seconds.
Kemp scored 12 points in the first period, helping Cleveland to
a 32-19 lead. Wesley Person, who had six points, made a driving
layup to cap a 6-0 spurt and give the Cavaliers a 42-23
advantage four minutes into the second quarter.
Portland closed the period with a 12-2 run and pulled within
51-41 when Smith sank a pair of free throws 5.9 seconds before
halftime.
Scottie Pippen, who had 10 points and 11 boards, dunked to cap
an 8-0 spurt and pull Portland within 53-39 with 7:52 left in
the third.
The Blazers used a 10-2 surge and took their only lead, 68-67,
on Stoudamire's 3-pointer with 1:29 to go in the quarter. But
Knight responded with a 15-footer and Cleveland scored the final
eight points of the period.
