Game Story
SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Chris Webber scored 28
points, grabbed 11 rebounds and added six assists as the surging
Sacramento Kings extended their winning streak to six games with
a 110-105 victory over the slumping Houston Rockets.
Jason Williams added a season-high 25 points and 12 assists for
the Kings (7-1), who earned their second win over Houston in
four nights. Sacramento has not lost since a 114-101 setback to
Minnesota in Japan on November 6.
"It was a really good win for us," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman
said. "I don't know how many times we jumped ahead by 10 and it
looked like we could control the game and then they (Houston)
come back. Jason was really good tonight and Webber made a lot
of good decisions. But they were tough."
A 3-pointer by Charles Barkley cut Sacramento's lead to 99-97
with 5:25 left in the fourth quarter, but Predrag Stojakovic
answered his own 3-pointer to regain the five-point advantage.
Bryce Drew made a 21-footer as the Rockets pulled within three
with 3:09 remaining, but Webber answered back with a 13-footer
from the left corner to give the Kings a 104-99 lead. Scot
Pollard delivered a driving dunk off a pick-and-roll to extend
the advantage to 106-99 with 2:15 to play.
Rookie Steve Francis tried to rally his team as he made 1-of-2
free throws and added a 3-pointer with 52 seconds remaining to
pull the Rockets within three.
But Williams, who was matched up with Francis most of the night,
drained a 19-footer with 29 seconds to play, giving Sacramento a
five-point cushion.
Pollard was called for goaltending with nine seconds left off a
shot by Francis as Houston pulled within 108-105. But Darrick
Martin was fouled and sank both free throws with eight seconds
left to seal the victory.
"We just aren't good enough," Barkley said. "We're missing a
lot. Nobody's going to tell you the truth but me. We just
aren't very good. We're still making the same mistakes we made
in the first game, even the preseason. Until we accept the
challenge and we realize we've got to get better, then we're
going to struggle."
Francis had 21 points and nine rebounds and Hakeem Olajuwon
added 20 points and 15 boards. Olajuwon was held scoreless in
the fourth quarter.
"We need to just keep working hard, stick together and don't
break up or get frustrated with each other, because then things
will only get worse," Olajuwon said. "We need to be encouraging
each other. I mean, it's not like we're not playing well. We
are playing well, just not good enough to win. It's very
frustrating, because every one of us knows we should be
winning."
Playing without Kelvin Cato and Tony Massenburg, Houston (2-10),
which lost 128-110 to Sacramento at home on Thursday, suffered
its fifth straight loss and has the most losses in the league.
Cato missed the game with a sore right knee and Massenburg was
sidelined with the flu.
Sacramento led 33-21 after the first quarter, which was its
largest lead of the game, but the Rockets opened the second
quarter with a 17-2 run.
Cuttino Mobley had eight points in the burst, including a dunk
which tied the game at 35-35 and a 3-pointer that put Houston in
front.
But the Kings went on their own 18-8 run over the next 5:54,
with Williams scoring seven points and Webber adding six.
Williams' driving layup with 2:11 remaining in the quarter gave
Sacramento a 53-46 advantage.
Webber and Williams combined to score Kings last 11 points of
the second quarter, helping them to a 60-50 advantage.
After Webber made a four-footer to give the Kings a 68-56 lead
with 9:17 to play in the third quarter, the Rockets scored 11
straight points over the next 3:13 to cut the deficit to one.
Francis scored four points in the run and Olajuwon, who had 10
points in the third quarter, hit a 13-footer to move in the
surge.
The Kings shot 48 percent (48-of-99) from the floor, compared to
43 percent (43-of-95) for Houston.
