Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn scored 23 points and Alonzo Mourning added 22 as the Miami Heat pulled away in the second half for a 110-92 victory over the Boston Celtics.
After the Celtics pulled within 67-63 midway through the third quarter, Miami ripped off a 15-4 run to take an 82-67 lead on Mark Strickland's layup with 11:36 remaining in the fourth quarter.
"Once we start playing defense and making shots and pushing the pace, we're a very explosive team," Mashburn said. "We rely on our defense and it is very important to put teams away. That is something that we've been working on."
Rookie Adrian Griffin scored nine of Boston's first 13 points as the Celtics jumped to a 13-6 lead with 8:29 remaining in the opening quarter. But the Heat battled back to take a 28-27 first-quarter lead and never trailed thereafter.
"This was a good win for us," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "In the past, we have had problems closing out double-digit leads. Boston has the ability to come back quickly with their pressure."
Antoine Walker had 18 points for Boston, which dropped two games behind the first-place Heat in the Atlantic Division. Paul Pierce contributed 15 and Griffin added 14 for the Celtics. However, Griffin was held to just two points in the second half.
Miami shot 52 percent (40-of-78) from the field and converted 20 Boston turnovers into 30 points.
"Our No. 1 dilemma has been turnovers and it was once again tonight," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "When we run our offense we get good shots. When we break our offense, we turn the ball over."
Tim Hardaway chipped in with 15 points for Miami (8-2), which has won seven of its last eight contests and boasts the best record in the Eastern Conference.
Miami dropped all three meetings with the Celtics last season during the lockout-shortened campaign and Walker thought the Heat were fired up after not being able to beat Boston last season.
"I think they took this a little personally," Walker said. "We play them three more times this year and we understand the intensity level of this game now."
Mashburn, who starred for Pitino at the University of Kentucky, was 9-of-19 from the field earned raves from his former coach.
"He is a great basketball player," Pitino said. "He's always been great and now his body has caught up to his game. He's been a great player since the eighth grade. He's quicker, faster and he loves to pass the basketball."
Boston was only able to convert 14 Miami turnovers into six points. Riley thought the Celtics were dragging after Friday's 109-96 victory over the New Jersey Nets.
"They did not pressure us that much tonight," Riley said. "I think coming off their big win last night, they were tired."
After the Celtics closed to 54-51 on Vitaly Patapenko's hook with 10:41 remaining in the third quarter, the Heat opened a 59-51 lead on P.J. Brown's layup with 9:01 left in the period.
Taking 13 3-pointers in the first half, Miami forged a 54-49 halftime lead but Riley was unhappy with the Heat's play.
"Our bench gave us some energy," he said. "We need to keep running and attacking the basket. We took too many 3s in the first half, which means we were settling for two many jump shots."
Kenny Anderson's driving layup pulled Boston within 67-63 with 3:44 to play in the third quarter but the Celtics got no closer as Mashburn's layup capped a 6-0 spurt that made it 73-63. Miami took an 80-67 cushion into the final period on Dan Majerle's dunk with four-tenths of a second remaining.
