Game Story
CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Dale Davis keyed a third-quarter run and Jalen Rose continued his strong play, leading the Indiana Pacers to a 107-98 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Indiana trailed by 12 points midway through the second quarter and by six at halftime. But sparked by Davis, who scored all 12 of his points in the third quarter, the Pacers outscored Cleveland 31-16 in the period to take control of the game.
"We were lucky we were down only six at the half," Indiana coach Larry Bird said. "We came out in the second half and made the shots. That third quarter was as well as we've played all year."
Rose, who scored a career-high 28 points earlier this week, added 22 more tonight and Rik Smits had 18 for Indiana, which avoided its third straight loss.
Defensively, the Pacers forced Cleveland into 22 turnovers that they turned into 20 points.
"We controlled the first half," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "But our turnovers killed us in the second half. The intensity with which they came out was the difference."
Shawn Kemp tallied 29 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for Cleveland, which suffered its third straight loss and was held under 100 points for the second straight game after reaching the century mark in points in five straight contests.
Kemp, who connected on 13-of-24 shots from the floor, gave the Cavaliers their biggest lead of the contest at 49-37 with 5:50 left in the second quarter after dropping in a four-footer.
Reggie Miller drilled pair of 3-pointers as the Pacers closed the half on a 15-9 surge to get within 58-52. Miller, who came into the game averaging just under 20 points, scored just 13 points.
Sparked by that run at end of the first half, the Pacers quickly took control in third quarter. Smits had consecutive baskets, Davis a dunk and Rose sank a 3-pointer to trigger a 19-2 spurt to open the period.
Davis, who had eight points in the run, capped it with a dunk with 6 1/2 minutes left in the quarter that put Indiana ahead, 71-60. Smits also had eight points in the burst.
"In the first half we didn't get back on 'D' and that enabled them to hit open shots," Davis said. "They really pushed the ball. In the second half, I think we did a good job of getting back and we were able to convert and get some easy baskets ourselves."
Davis connected on 6-of-9 shots from the floor as Indiana shot 49.5 percent (45-of-91).
Indiana led by nine entering the fourth period and maintained a comfortable advantage with closest the Cavs coming, 88-81, with 10:22 to play after Wesley Person hit a 3-pointer.
Bob Sura added 21 points for Cleveland, which shot 52 percent (40-of-77) and held a 32-26 rebounding edge.
