Game Story
ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Chris Gatling scored 28 points and Darrell Armstrong added 21, including eight in the fourth quarter, as the Orlando Magic snapped a four-game losing streak with a 107-103 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.
Orlando took a 102-97 lead with 2:12 remaining on a 3-pointer by Gatling, but Dikembe Mutombo sank two free throws 70 seconds later. After a missed 3-pointer by Gatling, Jimmy Jackson scored on a dunk to cut Orlando's lead to 102-101 with 34 seconds to go.
On Orlando's next possession, Gatling was double-teamed, but he kicked out to Armstrong, who drained a 25-footer with 12 seconds left to give Orlando a 105-101 advantage.
"I'll take it. It was a big shot," Armstrong said. "Sometimes you'll be off the whole game, then at the end you come up with the big shot. I can't worry about how well I'm shooting. I've just got to keep shooting."
"That 3-point shot at the end of the game really hurt us," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "That was a huge shot because we had stopped them. I felt if we stopped them one more time we'd have control of the game."
Mutumbo was fouled with nine seconds left and made the first free throw. After a miss on his second free throw, Jackson grabbed the rebound but missed the layup. Alan Henderson was fouled on the rebound with seven seconds left.
Henderson made only one of two free throws to cut the lead to 105-103. Armstrong was fouled by Isaiah Rider and sank both free throws to seal the victory with three seconds to go.
"We played with great energy tonight," said Orlando coach Doc Rivers, who played for Atlanta from 1983-91. "I thought in the first quarter we played hard, but we didn't contest shots, and the Hawks were making open shots. After that we were terrific."
Orlando (5-6) nailed all three of its 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and committed only nine turnovers in the game.
"We were really disappointed the way we played yesterday," Gatling said. "Tonight, we really wanted to execute. That's the way we have to be. We're not going to outscore teams, but we have guys that work hard and get the second effort. Blue collar guys."
Mutombo had 22 points, 21 rebounds and six blocks and Jackson added 19 for Atlanta (3-7), which made only 13-of-22 free throws en route to its fifth loss in seven games.
Orlando trailed by three at the intermission, but were helped by Atlanta's poor shooting in the third quarter. The Hawks shot only 9-of-24 and made only 5-of-9 free throws as the Magic took an 81-77 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Magic shot a miserable 36 percent (11-of-30) from the field in the first quarter while the Hawks shot a blistering 63 percent (14-of-22) to take a 28-25 lead.
Orlando went on a 10-0 burst midway through the second quarter to take a 44-36 lead. Michael Doleac scored four points in the run, including a layup with 5:07 left to give the Magic the eight-point cushion.
But the Hawks went on their own 8-0 run to tie the game at 44 as Jackson nailed a 26-footer, Henderson made a layup and Mutombo converted on a 3-point play with 3:13 to go in the period.
Orlando shot 46 percent (46-of-100) for the game but went to the free throw line just 15 times, making 12.
Atlanta sank 47 percent (47-of-90) of its shots and outrebounded Orlando, 53-46, but committed 16 turnovers in addition to its poor performance at the line.
