Game Story
HOUSTON (Ticker) -- The Sacramento Kings went to their bench to
end years of futility against the Houston Rockets.
Predrag Stojakovic scored 20 points and paced a 68-point effort
by Sacramento reserves in a 128-110 victory that snapped an
11-game losing streak against the Rockets.
Jon Barry and Darrick Martin each added 14 points and Lawrence
Funderburke had 12 off the bench for the Kings, who put away the
game with a 17-1 spurt in the fourth quarter. The run began and
ended with jumpers by Funderburke, who held Houston star Hakeem
Olajuwon to one point in the final period.
"I thought Lawrence Funderburke did a great job on Olajuwon in
the fourth," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "This is a great
win for us, especially by snapping the losing streak against
them."
Sacramento won its fourth straight game and defeated the
struggling Rockets for the first time since April 5, 1996.
The Kings opened the season with two games in Japan and
continued to go long distance, making 14-of-33 shots from
3-point range. Seven were by Jason Williams, who had 23 points
and 10 assists.
"I've been struggling with my shots from the outside," he said.
"Before the game, coach suggested that tonight I start inside
and then move my way outside, and that's what I did. But you've
got to credit our bench for this win. No doubt about it."
Sacramento also had lost seven straight games at the Compaq
Center, where Houston is winless in six tries for its worst home
start since 1973-74.
Olajuwon scored 31 points and Charles Barkley had 16 and 16
rebounds for the Rockets (2-8), who squandered a 16-point first
quarter lead and are off to their worst overall start since
losing their first 10 games in the 1982-83 season.
"When we get a lead, we can't lose our focus and start getting
loosey, goosey," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We've
got to stay aggressive, and we're not doing that."
The final quarter began with a 9-0 spurt by the Rockets that
gave them a 103-96 lead. Tony Massenburg capped it with a dunk
and a three-point play.
Sacramento dominated thereafter, outscoring the Rockets 33-7
over the final 10:20 and reaching the 100-point mark for the
fifth time this season. Martin and Stojakovic each had five points
in the 17-1 run.
"We're developing a killer instinct," Martin said. "I know that
when I'm out there and we get the opportunity to put the team
away, I'm trying to step on their throat."
The Rockets received a scare when rookie guard Steve Francis
suffered a calf injury on a driving layup late in the third
quarter. But he returned in the fourth and finished with 16
points.
Houston had only 30 points off the bench and commited 20
turnovers that were turned into 29 points.
"I'm very frustrated right now," Barkley said. "To keep losing
like this at home is embarrassing. Games aren't won in the
first quarter."
Olajuwon scored 11 points in the first quarter, helping the
Rockets jump to a 37-23 lead.
The Kings scored 10 consecutive points in the second period,
including a pair of 3-pointers by Barry, to cut the deficit to
four.
Houston built its lead back to nine on a jumper by Olajuwon with
1:47 left before halftime, but Stojakovic sank a 3-pointer to
slice the margin to 63-58 at intermission.
The Kings had a 17-6 spurt near the end of the third quarter,
taking the lead for the first time since the end of the opening
period on a dunk by Vlade Divac with three minutes left.
