Game Story
PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns got just what every struggling team needs -- a visit from the hapless Chicago Bulls.
Tom Gugliotta and Penny Hardaway scored 18 points apiece as the Suns halted a three-game losing and routed the Bulls for the second time on the young season, 105-81.
Noted for their offensive firepower rather than their defense prowess, the Suns turned to their defense in the third quarter to take control of the game.
Phoenix outscored the Bulls, 21-11 in the third, holding them to just four baskets in the period. They seized a commanding 82-61 advantage heading into the final period and led by as many as 31 on two occasions over the final 12 minutes.
"It was good to get back on the winning track," Phoenix coach Danny Ainge said. "This is obviously a team we should beat. Our effort was good particularly in the second half. We forced a lot of turnovers and got easy baskets, but we gave up some easy baskets too. In the second half we got the turnovers but we made them earn it a little more."
Rodney Rogers added 16 points and Jason Kidd handed out 11 assists for the Suns, who rolled to a 103-80 victory over Chicago earlier this month.
"We need to have a spark coming off the bench. We were shorthanded tonight with Cliff (Robinson) not playing so we tried to get the starters a break and get a lead. We can never count a team out like that if you don't put them away."
Elton Brand, the top overall pick in the draft, tallied 19 points for Chicago, which played its second straight game without leading scorer Toni Kukoc, who is sidelined with back spasms.
Chicago has dropped seven of its first eight games.
"I was really disappointed with our play tonight," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "All the things we accomplished was that we got them in a halfcourt game in the first half. But we didn't guard in the half and we gave up 61."
Holding a 67-57 advantage midway through the third quarter, the Suns took control with a 15-2 surge to close the period. Six different players scored in the burst.
Chicago, which shot just 42 percent (27-of-64) and committed 24 turnovers, trailed by more than 20 points the entire fourth quarter.
The Suns also used a spurt over the final 3 1/2 minutes of the first quarter to take the lead for good. They closed that period by scoring 13 of the final 15 points to take a 34-26 advantage.
Gugliotta tallied 14 points and Hardaway 12 in the opening half, helping Phoenix to a 61-50 advantage.
Hardaway and Gugliotta combined to make 15-of-23 shots for the Suns, who shot 55 percent (42-of-76) and held a 35-30 rebounding edge.
"It was a good win because we needed the win, but this is not the level of teams that we want to compete against at the end of the season and in the playoffs," Gugliotta said.
Luc Longley also had a strong game for Phoenix, contributing 13 points against his former team.
