Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The NBA-leading Portland Trail Blazers completed a Florida sweep as Rasheed Wallace drained a jumper with 1.3 seconds left en route to an 81-79 victory over the Orlando Magic.
The Trail Blazers won a showdown with the Heat in Miami on Tuesday and escaped with a victory tonight, scoring nearly 23 points under their average. They trailed until the final three minutes.
"It's a bit of a celebration just to get out of here with a win," said star forward Scottie Pippen, who was on the bench during the winning shot after scoring only nine points in 30 minutes.
Portland, which is 8-1, scored the only four points of the final two minutes. Pippen tied it at 79-79 with a layup and Wallace hit a turnaround jumper on the left side off a timeout.
Wallace, who also stole the ensuing inbounds pass, finished with a team-high 13 points as the Blazers snapped a six-game losing streak in Orlando, dating to 1992.
Chris Gatling scored 21 points off the bench for the Magic, but went cold down the stretch, missing three shots in the final two minutes.
Darrell Armstrong totaled 13 points, 10 rebounds and six assists and rookie Chucky Atkins scored 10 points for Orlando, which led by 10 in the first quarter before dropping its third straight.
"You look at us and then you look at them and you expect the old morale victory thing," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "But that's not what we are selling."
Arvydas Sabonis, Steve Smith and Damon Stoudamire scored 11 points apiece for the Blazers, who shot just 41 percent (34-of-83) from the floor and 58 percent (11-of-19) from the free-throw line. They also were outrebounded, 60-43.
"They were hitting the offensive glass," said Blazers forward Brian Grant, who played six minutes in his season debut. "They got to all the loose balls. They did everything they are supposed to do to win, but we pulled it out in the end"
Pippen had just two boards, but one set up the game-winning shot. He took his cold shooting touch to the bench before the final play.
"Scottie wasn't in because he wasn't shooting it real well," Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy said.
Portland took its first lead, 77-76, on Smith's layup with 2:56 left, and Pippen countered a 3-pointer by Armstrong with a driving layup to tie it at 79-79 with 2:03 remaining.
Gatling then misfired on an 18-footer with 1:55 to go and blew a 7-foot hook shot. Tariq Abdul-Wahad grabbed the offensive rebound, but missed a four-footer from the right sideline, and Ben Wallace failed on the follow.
"We had a chance to get a shot at it, maybe two or three," Armstrong said. "We just didn't execute. We just didn't knock down the shots."
Portland was dominated on the boards all night, but Pippen grabbed one off another miss by Gatling with 24 seconds left, setting up the winning hoop.
With Pippen going 4-of-12 from the floor, Dunleavy turned to Rasheed Wallace, who took a pass from Stoudamire in the left corner and buried the turnaround.
"I thought Damon Stoudamire made a great play, a great find for Rasheed, who made a terrific shot," Dunleavy said. "He was well defended.
"The last couple of plays down the stretch -- Rasheed getting a stop and picking off the last steal. Obviously, we are pleased with the outcome and like I said, it's important to win ugly."
