Game Story
SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- The Utah Jazz, hoping to make one
last run an NBA title, tonight completed a sweep of last
season's finalists.
Karl Malone had season highs of 33 points and 11 rebounds and
John Stockton added 17 points to lead Utah past the New York
Knicks, 98-90.
Bryon Russell and Jeff Hornacek contributed 10 points apiece for
Utah, which made its first 11 shots from the floor and raced to
a 25-10 lead. The Jazz were coming off a 91-85 victory over the
defending world champion San Antonio Spurs on Monday.
"A lot of those were because our defense got us better shots
than we have been getting," said Utah coach Jerry Sloan about
his team's shooting in the first period. "We executed pretty
well and had decent shots."
The Jazz, one of the league's oldest teams, made consecutive
trips to the NBA Finals before losing to Portland in the Western
Conference semifinals last season. Utah has kept the core of
its team intact the last three seasons, but Malone, Stockton and
Hornacek are each over 36 years old.
Latrell Sprewell scored 22 points and Marcus Camby added 18 for
New York, which lost in five games to San Antonio in the NBA
Finals last season. The Knicks rallied for a 102-95 victory at
Denver on Tuesday, but have lost five of seven since a 3-0
start. New York is 1-2 on the second game of back-to-back
contests.
"I don't know that's been our downfall all year, the second in
back-to-backs, not coming out ready to play," Camby said. "It
definitely caught up to us tonight. You can't get down 18, 19,
20 points to a Utah team at home. It's already tough (enough)
to win here as it is and then to dig yourself a hole and try to
climb out of it just made it that much more tough."
Larry Johnson totaled 14 points and 10 rebounds for New York,
which shot just 64 percent (12-for-19) from the free-throw line
and was outrebounded 46-33.
"I don't think there was any individual problem out there
tonight, I think it was a collective thing," Sprewell said.
"We're better than that, we have to come out and get it in our
minds that when we're in a back-to-back situation we're going to
win the game whatever it takes. That's been the problem this
year, we just haven't played well in back-to-back situations."
Howard Eisley, who had six points, capped a 7-2 spurt with an
18-footer that gave Utah a 34-14 bulge with 3:08 left in the
first quarter. Malone had 13 points and the Jazz shot 79 percent
(15-for-19) in the first period for a 36-23 lead.
"We had an excellent first quarter, that was one of the best
first quarters we've started out with, we had five guys really
try to help each other defensively, I think that was one of the
things that helped us," Sloan said.
Utah cooled down in the second period, shooting just 33 percent
(7-for-21), but held a 60-42 lead behind Stockton's eight
points.
"They've got a great team and they are going to make runs and
you realize that you're not going to shut them out completely,"
Malone said. "Those guys have a lot of character, they're
missing Pat (Ewing) so everybody else is stepping up too and
filling that void and you're not going to beat a team like the
Knicks by 30 points and they're going to make runs."
Charlie Ward and Sprewell each had four points as New York
closed the third quarter with a 12-4 surge to cut the deficit to
77-71.
Scott Padgett, who had eight points, opened the fourth with a
3-pointer to give Utah an 80-71 lead. The Knicks could not cut
the deficit under seven points thereafter.
