Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones had 24 points, nine assists and six rebounds and Derrick Coleman had season highs of 21 points and 18 boards off the bench as the Charlotte Hornets outlasted the Dallas Mavericks, 104-99.
Elden Campbell had 15 points and seven rebounds for Charlotte, which won the game at the free-throw line, making 34-of-41 shots. Rookie Baron Davis and Brad Miller chipped in with 13 points apiece off the bench as Charlotte's substitutes outscored Dallas' reserves, 47-27.
"I felt like I really needed to do something," said Miller, who grabbed 12 rebounds in 17 minutes. "The starters played a lot of minutes last night. D.C. (Coleman) came in early in the rotation which meant I came in early. We've had to battle in all our games and we've only won the ones at home."
The Hornets are 5-0 in Charlotte Coliseum, but have lost all four of their road games.
Charlotte took an 80-65 lead into the final quarter, but Dallas used a 20-8 run to close within 88-85 with 3:15 left. But Coleman, who also blocked six shots, responded with a dunk 25 seconds later to give the Hornets a 90-85 lead.
"We played well tonight with a lot of intensity," said Charlotte coach Paul Silas. "What can you say about Derrick Coleman He is feeling better and gives us a big presence. He was scoring and rebounding and went all out tonight."
Robert Pack had 27 points and 14 assists for Dallas, which shot 42 percent (37-for-89) and failed to win three straight games for the first time this season. Michael Finley and Dirk Nowitzki scored 16 points for the Mavericks, who made 21-of-26 free throws.
Nowitzki made a 21-footer to cut the deficit to 90-87 with 1:42 remaining. Jones answered with two free throws for a 92-87 lead with 56 seconds to play and Davis, Coleman and Jones combined to make 12-of-12 free throws down the stretch.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 19-5 lead when Erick Strickland made a 3-pointer with 6:33 left in the first quarter. But the Hornets used an 11-2 burst to close within, 25-23, when Jones made a pair of free throws with 89 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
The Mavericks pushed the lead to 34-27 when Cedric Ceballos made two free throws 89 seconds into the second quarter. But Charlotte outscored Dallas, 29-7, over the rest of the second to take a 56-41 lead at the half. Miller had eight points in the second quarter and Coleman added six.
"Tonight we had the second quarter blues, it just kills us," said Dallas coach Don Nelson. "We looked like two different teams in each of the first two quarters. It was not one guy, it was everybody. I give our team a lot of credit for fighting back the way we did. We gave ourselves a chance at the end, and I am proud of that."
