Game Story
TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Toronto Raptors finally defeated the Detroit Pistons at home, blanking them over the final four minutes for an 89-85 victory.
Antonio Davis posted season highs with 24 points and 15 rebounds and Vince Carter scored 21 points for the Raptors, who won for the first time in eight home games against Detroit. Toronto recorded a 123-106 win in Auburn Hills on Thursday and is 4-13 all-time against the Pistons.
Doug Christie contributed 15 points and eight rebounds for Toronto (5-2), which closed with a 10-0 run and moved one half-game ahead of the Indiana Pacers for first place in the Central Division.
Jerry Stackhouse and Jerome Williams each scored 26 points for the Pistons, who had won two of their previous three games. The 26 points were a career best for Williams, who also had 10 rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench.
"You can't go the last five minutes of a game not score and expect to win," said Detroit coach Alvin Gentry. "They made plays and we didn't. Jerome Williams has been doing this all season for us, it was no surprise. We played well until the end of the game. It's a shame because we played well enough to win."
Detroit's starting frontcourt of Grant Hill, Terry Mills, and Christian Laettner combined to shoot a miserable 26 percent (9-for-34). The trio pulled down just 12 rebounds.
"In the last four minutes you've got to make plays," Laettner said. "One of these games we're going to get everybody clicking at the same time. The only guy who's been making something happen for us is Jerome. He's been getting a lot of loose balls, putbacks and a lot of garbage buckets. If we can get everyone contributing like that we'll win some games."
The Pistons did not score after Stackhouse dunked for an 85-79 lead with 4:18 to play.
Carter, who made 6-of-9 free throws, hit a foul shot with 3:23 left to begin Toronto's game-ending run. He then tied up Hill for a jump ball and after the the Raptors won the tip, Christie made an 11-footer to cut the deficit to 85-82.
Davis waited out a double pump and blocked a layup by Hill and after getting fouled, made one free throw to pull the Raptors within 85-83 with 2:10 to go. The Pistons again had a chance to extend the lead, but Terry Mills missed two 3-pointers and Oakley came tied the game with a jumper from the left corner with 1:29 remaining.
"We have a lot of weapons and we played good defense when we needed to, which allowed us to have that 10-0 run down the stretch," Davis said. "Charles will never give up. You could see he was frustrated earlier in the game but that doesn't stop him. We need him to lead us and tonight he was able to do that."
After another turnover by Detroit, Oakley sank a 17-footer to put Toronto ahead, 87-85, with 22 seconds to go. Carter pulled down the rebound after Stackhouse's jumper hit the front of the rim and sent a pass to Muggsy Bogues, who made two free throws with 9.7 seconds left for his only points and the final margin.
"We just had to dig down, they're a tough team and we found a way to win down the stretch," Oakley said. "Earlier in the game I was trying to make the perfect pass and I turned it over a lot which hurt us. At the end I knew if I got the ball with a look I would shoot and luckily ot went in."
Davis had 12 points and Carter tallied 11 as Toronto held a 43-40 lead at halftime. Carter hit a jumper from the right corner to cap a 7-0 spurt and give the Raptors their biggest lead, 52-42, with 9:41 left in the third.
Detroit closed within, 58-56, when Williams made consecutive baskets and Stackhouse followed with two free throws with 4:54 left in the third. The Pistons ended the third with a 9-0 run, taking a 69-66 lead when Williams dunked with 1.1 seconds to play.
