Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- The Vancouver Grizzlies had a chance to move above .500 and snap a 24-game road losing streak tonight. But the Sacramento Kings snuffed those chances.
Chris Webber scored 19 points as the Kings posted their third straight win, 81-77, to extend Vancouver's road misery.
The Grizzlies had never been above .500 after six games in team history but appeared to have a good chance of doing so tonight. Trailing 78-75 with less than 30 seconds to play, the Grizzlies had the ball and a chance to tie. But Shareef Abdur-Rahim inexplicably drove the lane and dished to Bryant Reeves, who was rejected by Sacramento center Vlade Divac.
As the ball skipped toward the end line, Divac left his feet and sent an off-balance pass to Jon Barry, who was fouled and sank both free throws to give the Kings a five-point lead with 14 seconds remaining.
"We didn't score a lot of points, but our defense helped stay in the game and put us in the situation to win," Divac said.
Abdur-Rahim, who had 24 points and a season-high 18 rebounds, responded with a driving layup, but Jason Williams made 1-of-2 at the line to seal the victory for Sacramento.
Divac had 11 points and eight rebounds and Tyrone Corbin collected 10 boards off the bench for the Kings (4-1), who have not lost since dropping the back end of their season-opening two-game trip to Japan against Minnesota.
The Grizzlies (3-4) have started each of the past two seasons by splitting their first six games and have not won on the road since a 93-89 double-overtime triumph against the Los Angeles Clippers on February 16.
The Kings, who led the NBA in scoring in the lockout-shortened campaign, failed to reach 100 points for the first time this season.
"There's going to be nights like this," Sacramento guard Nick Anderson said after misfiring on 10 of 11 shots. "You know there's going to be nights where you won't be able to hit anything. But you need to just win ball games and that's what we did. This was a defensive win tonight."
Othella Harrington scored a season-high 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who shot 37 percent (31-of-83) and held a 56-53 advantage on the boards.
"That game was out there for the taking. You could taste it," Harrington said. "That's a good team over there and we played well considering the fact that we had a lot of turnovers."
Barry tallied 10 points for Sacramento, which shot a season-low 32 percent (31-of-96) but forced 23 turnovers.
"Some nights, it's just like pulling teeth and tonight was one of them," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "I don't know if we ever would have won a game last year shooting 32 percent. We got a few breaks and we just hung in there. I'm just pleased to get the win however I get it."
The Kings appeared to take the game by the throat in the third quarter. Williams sank a 3-pointer to spark an 8-0 run capped by Webber's thunderous dunk, giving the Kings a 60-52 lead with 5:24 remaining in the period.
But the Grizzlies chipped away and whittled the lead to 70-69 on Mike Bibby's 20-footer with 7:20 to play. Barry hit a technical free throw, Webber knocked down a seven-footer and a free throw and Corbin's 20-footer from the left corner made it 78-70 with 4:52 left.
"We could have played better," Bibby said. "We had a chance to win the game at the end, but we just didn't capitalize."
