Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson often is left with the dilemma of whether or not to leave superstar center Shaquille O'Neal in at the end of a close game. Every now and then O'Neal has a game like tonight to reward his coach's faith.
O'Neal had 34 points, 18 rebounds and eight blocked shots and controlled both ends of the court in the final minutes as the Los Angeles Lakers continued their dominance of the Suns in Phoenix with a 91-82 victory.
Glen Rice scored 23 points and Derek Fisher added 18 for the Lakers, who have won seven of their last eight in Phoenix. Los Angeles has opened the season winning seven of nine, despite the absence of injured starter Kobe Bryant.
"It was obviously a good win for us," Rice said. "Anytime you get a win on the road it is good but this is the way it's supposed to work."
Jason Kidd had 20 points and 10 assists for Phoenix, which has dropped three in a row. The Suns also had their 10-game home winning streak snapped.
Penny Hardaway's seven-footer with 2:16 to go drew Phoenix within 82-80 but O'Neal found Fisher for a 17-footer 22 seconds later. On the play Rodney Rogers was whistled for a technical foul and Rice sank the free throw for an 85-80 lead.
The Suns called timeout but right after the break, O'Neal blocked a Hardaway layup then grabbed the rebound of Rex Chapman's missed 3-pointer before being fouled. O'Neal, a liability late in the game because of his 33 percent free-throw shooting, made 1-of-2 from the stripe with 91 seconds left to push the lead to six.
The 7-1, 315-pound center drew another foul with 62 seconds left and again converted 1-of-2. Hardaway missed a 3-pointer on the other end and O'Neal grabbed the rebound. He got the ball to Fisher, who was fouled with 52 seconds and made both free throws to seal the victory.
"I like to make people eat their words," O'Neal said. "People like Marv Albert and the other coaches. I think when I need to hit free throws, I'll hit them. Everyone has weaknesses.
"At this point in my life, I'm glad I don't have the touch on the free throw line. If I was an 80-90 percent shooter, I'd be hard person to deal with. I wouldn't go to practice. I'd be like a 7-foot (Isaiah) Rider."
O'Neal was 14-of-27 from the field and 6-of-14 from the line in 43 minutes. The Lakers won despite shooting just 38 percent but did hold a 52-44 edge on the boards.
"He had an awesome game as far as filling up the stat sheet," Jackson said. "He even made some free throws down the stretch. We stayed in control of that game because of our rebounding and defense. We kept the pace of the game in our control."
"I thought we did a good job on Shaq," Phoenix coach Danny Ainge. "We just really didn't get anyone open to make big shots."
Hardaway and Cliff Robinson scored 12 points apiece for Phoenix, which got to the line just 19 times and committed 33 fouls.
"It looked like we didn't have the energy we should have had," Hardaway said. "We had some mental fatigue. I don't know if the Lakers just came in but they played a great game. We just didn't equal their intensity and play like we were capable."
