Game Story
WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning collected 25 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks as the Miami Heat extended its winning streak to four games with a 104-95 victory over the Washington Wizards, who have lost five straight games.
Tim Hardaway added 21 points and 11 assists for Miami, which eclipsed 100 points for the fifth time this season after reaching triple digits just four times in 50 games last season.
The Heat (5-1) bolted to a 21-6 lead on a layup by Dan Majerle with 4:44 remaining in the first quarter.
"In the first quarter, we just did a great job of rebounding and getting out and running with the ball," said Majerle, who scored 14 points.
Hardaway had nine points and six assists in the first quarter as the Heat, which led by as many as 23 points, took a 35-15 lead after one period.
"We just went out there and did what we needed to do," said Hardaway, who added three steals. "We played good defense, rebounded the ball and went on from there.
"Once we got that big lead, we were one step ahead of them the rest of the way. That's what a good team does."
Tracy Murray scored 15 points for the Wizards (1-5), who have not won since opening night against Atlanta. Washington shot less than 40 percent (35-of-88) from the field.
In the second quarter, Murray came off the bench and sparked a rally by Washington's reserves. Point guard Rod Strickland returned to cap a 21-4 run, pulling the Wizards within 39-36 with 5:43 remaining in the half. The Heat endured a scoreless stretch of 4:37.
"We knew that they were going to make a run," Majerle said. "We just didn't think it was going to be that big."
Miami's Jamal Mashburn, who scored 22 points, made a 3-pointer and three-point play to give the Heat a 51-44 lead with 1:39 left in the half.
The reserves again pulled the Wizards back into the game again in the third quarter. Washington took its lone lead at 66-64 on Gerard King's strong drive with 4:22 left. Mashburn hit a tying jumper and Majerle kicked the Heat back into its running mode.
"We knew that they would come back," Hardaway said. "Their reserves came into the game and had more energy than us, that's all. They made things happen, but we just had to sustain our drive to get the win."
The Wizards closed to 86-83 on a pair of free throws by Aaron Williams with 6:55 remaining. Hardaway made 3-of-6 free throws in the final 55 seconds to seal the victory.
P.J. Brown had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Heat, who shot 49 percent (38-of-77) from the field and were beaten on the boards, 49-40. Hardaway made four 3-pointers.
In addition to Murray off Washington's bench, rookie guard Richard Hamilton had 13 points and eight rebounds in 31 minutes and Williams scored 13 points in 23 minutes.
"We got the guys who got us back into the game, but they can't play the last 35 minutes of the game," Wizards coach Gar Heard said. "I had to give them a blow. And when I took those guys out, we went back.
"The effort was there after the first quarter. The starters really got us in a hole early, and the bench came in and played great. I've got to get our starters to play like our bench."
Strickland led the starters with 12 points and 15 assists. Juwan Howard added 11 points and Issac Austin 10 for the Wizards, who shot under 40 percent (35-of-88) from the field.
