Game Story
SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Game Six goes to the Kings.
In what had the look and feel of a continuation of last season's
playoff series, the Sacramento Kings roared past the Utah Jazz,
105-92, with a balanced attack led by Chris Webber's 20 points.
The Kings opened the season with a pair of games in Japan and
were playing at Arco Arena for the first time since Game Four of
their Western Conference first-round series against the Jazz.
Facing elimination, the slower but more experienced Jazz won
that game by one point and returned home to capture Game Five in
overtime.
"We can't take back last year," Webber said. "They beat us last
year. They were the better team."
"I guess you could say we kind of made a statement but I think
most of us really didn't think much about last year," said Kings
center Vlade Divac, who scored 10 points.
In front of a sellout crowd of 17,317, many wearing shirts that
said "Purple Reign," the Kings broke open a close game with an
18-6 run in the third quarter, then put away the Jazz with
another burst in the final period.
"There was something definitely out there, something you can
feel," said Kings guard Nick Anderson, who was acquired in the
offseason. "And I gotta tell you, it's great to be a part of it.
The game's intensity was incredible and I hope it stays like
this. Hopefully we can carry this over to each game."
Sacramento guard Jon Barry made two 3-pointers during the last
spurt and had to be restrained by teammates after hopping and
skipping his way upcourt. Barry finished with 12 points off the
bench.
"Barry gave us a lift tonight in the fourth," Divac said. "He
was really big."
"I thought we had some huge production from our bench," Barry
said. "We were able to come in and get some big minutes and
plays and give our starters a break."
The crowd also got into it, harshly booing former King Olden
Polynice and delivering a mock cheer when Jazz forward Karl
Malone was knocked to the floor late in the second quarter.
Malone was motionless on the floor for about a minute before
being helped to his feet.
"Anytime you see something like that, it's just a crazy thing,"
Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "But I'm amazed at this business.
The more that I see. When a player gets hurt, the fans cheer.
If they need to win that badly, then I really don't care."
"If it's a rivalry, then fine, let it be a rivalry," Polynice
said. "But people pay money to see basketball and not all that
other crap. People don't understand. His family's watching.
The NBA is riding high on the Kings right now. These fans
finally got a good team. Let them enjoy it."
Jason Williams added 18 points for the Kings (2-1), who had six
players in double figures and shot 44 percent (39-of-88) from
the field.
The foul-plagued Malone scored 20 points for the Jazz (3-3), who
were coming off a home victory over powerful Portland. Utah shot
less than 39 percent (34-of-88) and committed 18 turnovers.
"All last year and after the Finals (in 1997 and 1998) it's been
like this, with other teams gunning for us," said Jazz guard
Jeff Hornacek, who scored 14 points. "We have to prepare for
them. Right now, we're not at that level."
A basket by Malone pulled the Jazz within 53-52 early through
the third quarter before the Kings took control. Williams
scored the first eight points of the burst and a short jumper by
Divac extended the lead to 63-55 with 6:09 to go.
Utah's Howard Eisley made a 3-pointer before three-point plays
by Webber and Corliss Williamson and a dunk by Divac built
Sacramento's lead to 71-58 with 3:28 remaining.
The Jazz scored the first six points of the fourth quarter and a
3-pointer by Pete Chilcutt cut the deficit to 80-74 with 9:44
left. But Malone picked up his fifth foul during Sacramento's
10-2 spurt that included two 3-pointers by Barry, the second
giving the Kings a 95-78 bulge with 4:52 to go and sending the
crowd into a frenzy.
"Our sixth man was great tonight and we're gonna need that every
night," said Anderson, who scored 12 points.
Lawrence Funderburke had 11 points and seven rebounds off the
bench for the Kings. Webber pulled down nine rebounds and Divac
grabbed eight.
Greg Ostertag had 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Jazz, whose
starters were outscored, 68-46.
"It would be too easy to say that we turned the corner and I
don't even want to get into that," Webber said. "It's only our
third game and this year is totally different. We played good
basketball tonight. We have another year more of maturity and
now we're really hungry."
After a slow start, Webber scored nine points in the second
quarter to help the Kings grab a 51-44 halftime lead.
