Game Story
MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The only thing hotter than the Milwaukee
Bucks in the third quarter was the temper of Phoenix Suns
forward Tom Gugliotta.
The Bucks broke open a two-point game by thoroughly dominating
the final nine minutes of the third period and cruised to a
107-92 victory over the Suns.
Included in the third-quarter collapse was a technical foul on
Gugliotta, who exploded at referee Greg Willard over a no-call
late in the period. After Gugliotta was whistled for the
technical, he continued to jaw and drew another foul off a
missed free throw before being benched by coach Danny Ainge for
the remainder of the game.
"The Bucks played well and we didn't," said Gugliotta, who
refused to discuss the officiating. "I don't think we can play
as well as we can. ... We just weren't sharp tonight."
Even with Gugliotta in the lineup, the Suns were no match for
the Bucks in the third quarter. Penny Hardaway's 12-footer 2:48
into the second half got Phoenix within 62-60 but Milwaukee
scored 26 of the next 30 points. Former Sun Sam Cassell capped
the run by sinking the free throw that followed Gugliotta's
technical.
Glenn Robinson led Milwaukee with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Ray
Allen added 20 points and Cassell finished with 19. The win was
just the second in 17 meetings with Phoenix this decade.
"The best player on the court was Glenn Robinson," Bucks coach
George Karl said. "The best offensively and defensively."
Allen and Cassell entered the contest as the league's hottest
backcourt tandem, combining for 48 points per contest. Their 39
points and 19 assists tonight more than held up against the 36
and seven garnered by the Suns' more heralded duo of Hardaway
and Jason Kidd.
"We have a tremendous offensive team," Allen said. "They, Kidd
and Hardaway, are expected to have a big output each night, but
we have a pretty good backcourt, too. As long as we can win
games, I don't care."
"We know we can play with every team in the league," Cassell
added. "My job is easy. I've got two excellent scorers out
there, if I can get them the ball and let them do their thing."
Hardaway scored 19 points and Kidd added 17 for the Suns, who
shot just 38 percent from the floor in having a four-game
winning streak snapped. Phoenix has not won five in a row since
a nine-game run from March 29-April 15, 1998.
"We felt we played good defense, but they just kept making great
shots," Kidd said. "For them, making shots became contagious.
For us, missing shots became contagious. We lost the game
offensively and defensively."
After a tight first half in which neither team was able to gain
much of an edge, the Suns scored seven of the first 11 points of
the second half to draw within two. Robinson sparked the run
with a 14-footer off a feed from Cassell and Gugliotta missed a
nine-footer, then committed a turnover.
Ray Allen hit two free throws with 8:29 to go and Robinson sank
a 15-footer for a 68-60 edge. Rookie Shawn Marion halted the
run with a three-foot hook but Allen responded with a 16-footer
and two free throws before Robinson hit a free throw, dunk and
short jumper.
Trailing 77-62, the Suns got a tip-in from Gugliotta with just
under four minutes left but the Bucks scored the next 11 points
to pull away. Robinson, Cassell and Allen had three apiece
during the stretch and Phoenix never got closer than 12 the rest
of the way.
